: Question regarding TH700 auto tranny
Fred Wilson 10-24-2001, 06:25 PM Will it fit, length, etc. in a '98 TJ that originally had the AX-15 tranny (5 speed). I'm assuming that I'll need an adapter, but what about the length, etc.

RepoMan 10-24-2001, 06:43 PM just about anything can be made to fit, call advance adapters they will have whats needed.
orbitcat 10-24-2001, 06:45 PM Fred -
The length is close to the same. It is 24.75". This includes the adapter to the T/C. The bellhousing adapter adds another 5/8". I am using the Atlas II.
I am finding out that this is not a cheap swap. HTH.
Fred Wilson 10-24-2001, 07:14 PM I haven't even begun to price anything. I'm just sort of thinking out loud (damn that hurts!). Anyway, *if* something like this was to happen, it seems that, even if it's not "cheap", the TH700 may be a better idea. "Low" first gear compared to some of the other options (like the TF999) for rockcrawling (adding a Tera 4:1 and already have 4.56's) and an overdrive.

orbitcat 10-24-2001, 07:33 PM That was the same boat I was in. As I was doing my research, the late 700-R4 (4L60) seemed the way to go. So far, the swap has been going fairly smooth. Haven't finished it since I got roped into a CJ springover with YJ springs.
Anyway, I am learning much more than I thought I would.
watts 10-24-2001, 08:19 PM Here's a write up on it.

orbitcat 10-24-2001, 09:32 PM Here is another write up.
AX-15 to 700-R4 Swap (http://www.outdoorwire.com/4x4/jeep/tech/trans/yj700r4/)
I purchased most of these parts before I even found this page. It seems like it will work very good. The only thing that I have heard is that 5.13 gears will put the 4.0L in it's powerband with the 700-R4 and 35" rubber.

jollygreengiant 10-25-2001, 01:29 AM So what all needs to be done to the 700R4 for it to handle a V8?

Um, ah bolt it behind one
Most 700's started life behind 305's, and 350's..and also 4.3's. Auotmatic Camaros, and Firechicken's use use 4L60's behind the LT1.
RepoMan 10-25-2001, 01:07 PM what needs to be done to a 700 do a search for raptor transmissions they have all the hop up parts and as make sure you don't get one of the weaker 700's that come before '86 as they are shit...just an observation but there are a lot of 's here just as in ju just not as many! so get over it 's
