: How are we going to conduct an urban war?

Just looking for input here.

We've already spent time, and personell, conducting operations around Iraqi civilians and operations that might incur worldwide condemnation. We're on the moral defensive here, whether you agree or not is irrelevant. If we step on too many toes, we're going to get a helluva lot of flack from the world community.

The Coalition has already acknowledged we need Iraqi civilians rising up against Hussein, they are reporting hopes that this may be forthcoming, and despite a lot of rehtoric, are dissapointed it hasn't happened yet. Watch Fox, the network supporting the war. They constantly harp on the fact that the Iraqis are afraid, and report every tidbit of indication they might be revolting.

So what happens when we enter Baghdad, and start fighting building to building? Civilians will get killed in that scenario, and the Baath regime has indicated it's complete willinginess to sacrifice civilians wholesale.

We faced this type of opposition in Vietnam, a war in which we won every single high-intensity battle, dominated in a military sense, but because of the 'moral' handicaps, could never implement total victory. Cambodia was taken over by the children of the Khmer Rouge using civilian terror tactics. They work, very very well.

So how do we get around it this time?

we are not.

my suspicions are that there will not be a full move into Baghdad.

Woah! thats quite the idea. What do you think they will do if they don't go into the city?
I can't see the Iraqi civilians being much help after what happened to the Kurds.

You cannot win a polite war. Innocent lives will be lost, but less will die if you just do it quickly and agressively.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of ripping off a bandaid, but I've never deflowered a virgin, so I wouldn't know.;)

I think we will wait outside the city for a while, drawing more and more Iraqi fighters out of the city, and as we kill them off, more will come out as we inch closer. That will reduce the numbers in the city.

We also have special forces inside the city, I'm sure they are giving feedback on where the forces are collecting, and airstrikes are called in to take them out.

I think by the time we go into the city, there won't be very many of them left.

These Generals know their stuff, I think they have a very good gameplan for it.

I think that's their biggest fear.

Problem with the civilian uprising is diplomatically we screwed the pooch in 91. We made the Kurds all these promises and once they did rebel we left them hanging as we went home.

Similar problems are happening already, we are racing through towns and the townspeople come out and celebrate our arrival. Well the convoy blows through town and the celebrants are hung or shot by the Iraqi paramilitary that were hiding in the shadows.

We haven't done much to instill a lot of faith in your average Iraqi civilian
