: elongating holes in 1/4" plate

I need to elongate the holes for the T-case mount in my skid. The skid is 1/4" steel, but with the tools I own it will take me forever.

The slotd where the Tranny mount stud drops through needs to be about 3/8" longer, and the access hole for each slot that is about 1" round needs to be oval'd out so I get a socket on the nut after it slides into the longer slot.

So, Its either time to buy some new tools, or beg/borrow/barter something locally.

 ? :blender: ?

and I don't want to drop the skid to do this.

Ideas?

If you have air then a DIE GRINDER with a carbide bit Baby! If you go that rought then harbor freight has die grinders for less than $20 but don't waist your $$$ on any other bit than a carbide one.

Who carries small diameter grinder bits?

The slots are about 3/8" wide by 1" long and I need to lengthen them about 3/8"

A welding shop or order them from www.mcmaster.com
They will get it to you the next day.

Cool, I learned something today. :bounce: :bounce2:

I was searching looking for a carbide bit for a die grinder and couldn't find any, cuz I didn't know the right name.

its not a bit, its a "bur"

Ok I went to the Bur page and the one I would get is the SB-1L pn#4292111. This is a cylindrical double cut bur. The single cut ones tend to chatter when used in the way you are talking about. The double cut will make short work of slotting the holes. While you are ordering get a few types or order a set because they better than sliced bread as mentioned before. I have 2 die grindes and think I will get a 3rd one because I use them all the time.
