: Fawked 231
Mcstiff 11-14-2001, 02:43 PM So my t-case is grindin like a son of a bitch. It only does it sometimes in 4 hi but nearly always in 4 lo. So I need some suggestions on what to do. I figure that the chain it stretched I also figure that some teeth might be messed up from the grinding. I want a atlas 2 but wont be able to afford on till spring. So, I'm thinking about gettign a 231HD to replace or rebuild my 231 with. What make/model should I be looking for in the pull and save? Thanks all.
JasonTJ 11-14-2001, 02:44 PM Go for a D300 don't bother with a 231
borton 11-14-2001, 02:46 PM a 231 HD from a dodge truck, has a yoke output, may want to look at a 241 from an older dodge, also have the fixed yoke output, but bigger, or another 231 from a jeep.
RoCkSkuLLz 11-14-2001, 02:54 PM Sounds like the planetary's, I destroyed mine once, Now ive got a Tera Low in my t-case. No problems anymore.. :D
I know someone who sellin a factory np-231. We just took it out of his YJ. Let me know if your interested, I can give you his e-mail address.
Sillyneck 11-14-2001, 04:51 PM I have the front half of a 231 that came out of my 87 21 spline unit I'll let go for cheap. I believe it has all the goods you need to quiet it done. I don't think the case was ever put into 4x4 w/ the stock low range stuff because it was female owned and I pulled the case the day I bought the heep to put in tera low.
I am also Pioneering a homebrew SYE if you need one :D
1TONTJ 11-15-2001, 11:39 AM Yeah, I switched my TJ from a 231 to a D300.
Add the HD output shaft, and 4to1 and it's practically an Atlas for less$$$ :D
Plus with the nice passengers side d300 you can run the easier to find Chevy D60's :)

Mcstiff 11-15-2001, 01:33 PM D300 whatever. If you look at my post I cant afford a atlas I cant afford a 300, flip kit, 4:1,and twin stick eather. I have a xj BTW. I think I'll pass on buy a case from y'all too. Seeing as I'm in CO. Shipping would be a bit much. Seeing that Xj's are so dam popular out here I'm sure I can find one at the pull and save. So what I want to know is what model dodge truck has the 231HD and will it bolt up to my auto tranny? If not I can swap the guts into my case correct?
swampintj 11-15-2001, 01:42 PM Dodge 1/2 and 3/4 ton from 97 up shoud have the case your looking for. You want to grab the chain, gears, output shaft, and planetary gear set. I'd also grab the pump while your in it.
All that should give you a beefier T-case than what ya' had.
Mcstiff 11-15-2001, 01:54 PM Sweet :D thanks swamp.

'94 and newer 1/2 ton Dodge truck 231HD's have a slip yoke like an XJ. 3/4 ton ones have a 241 with a slip yoke also.
You want a '93 or older 1/2 ton Dodge truck or Ramcharger 231HD, it has the fixed yoke and the HD parts... :D :D :D
Mcstiff 11-16-2001, 04:07 AM So is the fixed yoke shorter too? That would be great since the case will be under $100 from my local pull & save:D
Mcstiff 11-16-2001, 05:00 AM Awww hell. According to JB conversions the 231HD requires a SYE because the tailshaft is to long.
"The Dodge unit maintains the same shift pattern as the Jeep model as well as an identical 6-bolt mounting pattern. The input gear in this case is the 23 spline long version especially important to NV4500 swaps and V8 conversions. The popular "wide chain" conversion is not an extra expense when using the Dodge unit as it is already equipped with these heavy duty parts. Another added plus of the Dodge unit is the use of the large cone synchronizer and hub assembly which creates smoother shifts and is considerably stronger than the Jeep model. Since the DHD model is new, there is no need to purchase a rebuild kit and/or pay shop labor for a rebuild. When you consider the resale value of your existing NP231 which is $300.00 to $400.00 as a "good condition" take-out, the cost of buying a new DHD model becomes quite attractive. The use of a DHD model does require the installation of a slip-yoke eliminator kit such as that sold by this company. This requirement is due to the long tail housing found on DHD models"
So it looks like it would bolt up to the AW4 but I would have to swap the back cover and the input/output shaft to work with my slip yoke. Damn and I thought I was going to get rid of it for free. I really wish I didnt have to pay rent, I could have bought a lot of cool stuff by now:D
I don't think you really need the shorter fixed yoke on a XJ. They are probably talking about using it in a CJ/YJ platform.
