I'm about to order a millermatic 210 for some fab work and am going to order an auto darkening helmet with it. Looking at the hobart or speedglass - is the speedglas worth the extra$$

I have the speed glass and I love it. I haven't used any other kid but I can tell you this is the way to go Jim Aka Wilseya.

I have a speedglass.. There are those that like and dislike autodarkening helmets.. I like em. I also like the speedglass a bunch, it's half the weigh (if not less) than any of the other helmets I have (none of them autos) and comfy to wear, also is real easy to breathe in.

I second that..

The speed glass is a nice helmet.. Its very comfortable to wear and very nice to work with..

thats half the reason I dont own one yet is because I want a speed glass.. I always use mikes..

I have one of the 9000 x sideview speedglas helmets - worth every penny of the $550.00 ( Canadian ) that I paid for it. Light enough to use as a hood for hard hat combination and excellent for when welding in a restriction. A note of caution though - some of the cheaper models are not designed to be used when TIG welding, the auto dark does not work sometimes.

My friend gave me his old speedglass helmet when I got my Mig (only a true friend gives welding supplies :D) and I didn't know what I was missing, these autodark things are pretty darned cool....definitely worth the money if you can afford it.

First time one of your "buddies" at work decides it would be funny to light up a small garbage bag of acetylene behind you when you are under the hood you start to realize that the side windows are a good thing. After he realizes that it was you who welded his boots to the wall he quits with the pranks.

Has anyone used both a speedglas and Hobart?
- I've only used a Hobart (borrowed from a friend), and I really liked it, but the majority seems to like speedglas. Any cons to going with either?
That Speedglas 9000 with side windows is sweet - but already breaking the bank on the welder, so I'm trying to stay under $300 for the helmet.

Hobart - at least the Hobart Hood darkensup a little more than the speedglas. For a 210 amp GTAW machine should not be a issue - you won't need anything that dark anyway. But the speedglas has ( IMHO ) better optics, larger viewing area, better lower neck protection, and is lighter. Also has more adjustability in the shade #.But for someone who is hobby welding you are better off letting price decide your decision - they are both good and it is a individual choice as to which one is " better ". Would the dealer you are buying your Miller from cut you a deal on one or the other ??

OK, I'm in the same boat ...
It's time to start welding again since I put down my old red Lincon's stick handpiece decades ago.
I wasn't a great welder then either and only barely managed to build an engine stand and a tow bar.
I'm looking for Santa to bring me a Millermatic 220v 210 ... unless someone here has a better idea and (since reading this thread) maybe a SpeedGlass 9000F (fixed).
So ... for general MIG welding, mostly indoors and generally doing 18 Ga body steel to frame welding which Dark Shade should I ask Santa for ... 10, 11, or 12 ???
Will I be sorry I didn't ask for the much more expensive manually adjust " V " model?
Thanks in advance ... :emb:

For MiG you'll be in the #10 range. The adjustable ones are nice though.

I am a welder by trade and I have a Jackson Master. I love it it has adj. shade and delay for when it goes light after done welding and senceitivity. It is in the 300 range. No probs at all tiging even 18 gague. Kinda big and heavy is the only draw back. I have used the speed glass and didnt reall care for it. The Jackson is a much quicker hood. The professional is also a good hood.

I TIG all the time with a 9 shade, when stick at home I use a 10-11 usually a 10 since I rarely go over 100 amps

Auto dark welding helmets? Bahhhhhhhhh, next you'll want scented toilet paper or some such nonsense. OK, OK, I tried em, cant remember the brand, gave it three strikes (didnt darken when I struck the ark) before i gave it to a sorta friend (let him deal with the sand in the eyes). Just start tilting your head more when ya down a couple  to build up your neck muscles and then flip that hood the way a good welder should. :flipoff2:
