: Greasable shackle bolts . Do it your self
The Bear 11-14-2001, 08:15 PM I'm not sure how much thease greasable bolts cost . But I do know they don't look any stronger than the regular bolts you can buy . Why not drill a small passage in a good bolt then drill a slightly larger hole to accomadate a grease zerk . Tap the hole
screw the zerk in drill one more hole perpendicular to the passage to let the grease out of the
passage to reach spot you want to lubricate .Or in the collar the bolt is in . Seems to me those
greaseable bolts are not to hard to make and you could have a stronger set up depending on what grade bolt you buy . I just hate paying fot things I can do on my own . Also it keeps me out of the wife's hair . But thats fun too ...

CJ5-Man 11-14-2001, 09:52 PM talk about being a cheap ass, just buy the damn things. cutting oil and drill bits going through 8 4" long grade 8 bolts might not cost as much as the off the shelf greasables, but isn't your time worth something?
Isley 11-16-2001, 05:15 AM They cost between $5 and $6 each from M.O.R.E
Highlander 11-17-2001, 05:42 PM Which means if ya can't fab one in under 10 or 15 minutes , your wasting yur time:D ( or with labor prices in the Silicon Valley , if it aint uner 6 minutes , yur spinnin yur wheels)
The Bear 11-18-2001, 09:56 PM Come on guys its not about the money or the time . Its about if I can do it or not . Yea I could buy them . I come from the old school where you made the modifications yourself . If there was a good idea ,, You made it yourself with what ever you had . The
gradification of making or restoring parts yourself is much better than picking them off a shelf . All you hardcore guys say a jeep is built not bought . well I'm trying to build one . I was never a parts changer when I was a tech not going to happen now .
Do It Yourself Bear
so do one, then save the time and effort on the rest ;) you've proved you can do it
The Bear 11-18-2001, 10:05 PM Never thought of that
Bear
I agree with you on the whole... but there are some things that just really arent worth doing unless it's to prove you can ...
The Bear 11-18-2001, 10:20 PM Every one I talked to when I installed the Charger said you cant trick the Comp. into not knowing the charger is not there . I even talked to the guy who helped design and program the computer . X-employee of chrysler . He sat there and shot down every idea I had without a thought . I figured I could manipulate the signals and the comp would do what I wanted when I wanted . Then I reachered . Well look
who has 10,000 miles on a charged 4.0 bone stock with out a code being thrown . The challange is worth way more than money saved ..
Thanks Bear

wild1 11-18-2001, 10:27 PM I went to 4 wheel parts up here and they said almost 100 bucks for a few bolts. For that much I would make my own.

sometimes spending time working on the jeep is what i "work" for. for me doing mindless little things on the jeep with a couple of :beer:s is a great way to pass and evening
AggieLR 11-19-2001, 11:43 PM i'd have to agree on the makin stuff yerself, its just more fun to say you made most of the stuff other people bought, i did think it that idea with the bolts, i would drill the threaded end, not the head end, and mark the spot that sits directly between your bushings and drill small notches in those too, to allow the grease inside there
jdjanda 11-20-2001, 09:16 AM Come Awwwnn guys, pull your heads out of you arse. Fabbing your own stuff only goes so far. Yeah, I could fab up a set of high steer arms, but why? So I could say I made them, no thank you, the material and tools to fab up the parts alone aren't worth it. As far as the greasable bolts, I run them, couple of things. Buy extra you will sheer the fittings off, of the four lower bolts on my shackles, three are minus the fittings. Mount the zerk inboard if you can. Better option is install a fitting in the spring eye, up out of harms way, and that's something you can do yourself.
