Search didn't turn up much. Anyway My 94 4.0 has 114K on it and has a little knock at startup. After I drive for a while it is ok. Sometimes it does it while at a red light and sometimes not. I have dreaded the day this happens. If it's not knocking then I don't know what it's doing. Any help is appreciated fawk me

Probably a rod bearing. What is your oil pressure during these times?

You may just have a bad oil filter. The anti oil drain back valve maybe leaking.

It stays at 40 during idle and 60 while driving. This is according to the guage though. It just started recently. It's almost due for an oil change soon anyway. I'll find out then. Thanks again!

I have heard many 4.0's that rattled at idle from valve train noise. I would change the oil and put in a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. It cleans everything very well and if there is some blockage in the valvetrain anywhere this will clean it out. Worth a try.

yeah I have been around many that have had less than 40K on them and have a similar sound. I know it's normal to an extent for them. I just don't want it to crap out. It's my baby after all I'll definitely give that a try. I appreciate the help.

a lifter bleeding down? That was the reason my ZJ was making noise at start up. I only drive it about once a month but it didn't do it at stop lights. I just went ahead and rebuilt the big ol' 5.9

4.0L Had a problem with piston slap. Not really a problem it is just annoying. mine was doing it at 60K when i bought it and is still doing it at 130K. there is a updated piston that is teflon coated that will cure the problem.not too many other problems with these engines they are ALMOST bullet proof.

This is what I've read too. It was a problem with '94s and late '93s I think... Something about the heads being honed improperly during engine production. Anyway, I've also read that Jeep (Chrysler Corporation) may still cover part of the cost of having the head milled and the pistons re-ringed even if the warranty is up. I'd check with a dealer.

Jeep customer service 1.800.992.1997 be polite and they might help with the cost. They helped me with a cracked manifold a year past warranty.
