: TJ trans swaps

I have been doing research now for changes to my TJ in the spring of next year. The lift is obvious and I'll probably end up with an Atlas. I would like to pitch the Ax-15 and have been researching a granny 4 speed or 700r4. There is some information available on the net for the 700r4 conversion but I havn't seen anything regarding a t18, sm465 ect.

I have looked at AA, Novak and Hicks sites but can't seem to find adapters for a chevy or ford belhousing to the 4.0. An X-15 is more or less a foot longer than a truck 4 speed and has the shifter located to the rear of the transmission. It seems this would put the 4 speed shifter about a foot forward of its current location not taking into account an adapter plate or differences in bellhousing lenghts. Am I missing something or would I have to hack out the bottom of my dash to make it work?

I'm sure for the right amount of coin I can have an adapter made but the swap needs to make sence. Like I said I'm just doing the research in advance to try and avoid any suprises. I like the idea of the manual but havn't ruled out the 700r4 either.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure there is enough room to make a bend/extension in the shifter so you don't have to cut the dash.

Do you have a body lift yet?

You've got a few options re:shifters. The SM465s had a few different shifters available stock, so you can shop around and find one that's bent right, or get one and bend it yourself. I'd recommend some sort of body lift because the granny low trannys are so damn tall.

Obviously, the 700R4 has a cable linkage you can put anywhere. Do you have an automatic now? It'd be neat to get your existing column shifter to work with the new tranny.

I've been sort of, kinda, maybe thinking about the 700R4 swap (I have the AX15 now).. Seems to me that the 700R4 with a low stall converter (maybe 1200 rpm), and a manual lockup, would be a really nice rock crawling combo.

You're supposed to SUCK on a good rack, or maybe fondle it a bit. Don't crawl on it :flipoff2:
