: What makes someone a "good christian"?
JParuBob 04-09-2003, 05:28 AM With all these religious posts in the last few days, I'm curious as to what others think makes someone a "good christian".
So, what criteria do you have to satisfy to get this title?
No drinking?
No smoking?
No cussing?
Church every day of the week?
To my knowledge, I've not met anyone that I would consider a good christian, but then again, I don't pry into people's lives all that much.
Seems like every person that I've met that *claims* to be a good christian is either a "Sunday Christian" or hypocrite.
So, let's hear what you guys think.
baylorboy 04-09-2003, 05:34 AM As someone who has spent too much time in Christian institutions (raised Presbyterian, Episcopalian schooling, Baptist college, dated a Methodist and a Catholic), I can tell you that it really only takes one thing to be a "good" Christian. Love. Simply love everyone and everything, with God at the top. Of course, we all fail. There's some quote about like "the single greatest cause of non-believers is people who profess Jesus with their words and simply walk out the door." This seems to be your take on things. But we all fail. Hope this helps.

I'm not asking to make myself feel better or anything like that, I'm simply just curious.
baylorboy 04-09-2003, 05:45 AM I'm not trying to make you feel better. You said that everyone you see is either a "Sunday Christian" or a hypocrite. I'm saying that you're right about the hypocrite thing. Everyone (to some extent) is a hypocrite.

Sundowner 04-09-2003, 05:51 AM Iv'e always felt "Good Humans" were people who keep thier God damn noses out of other people's buisness and have respect for other humans who do them little or no harm.
The above criteria would exclude a massive amount of the population, including an impressive proportion of the clergy.

Well, technically, the grace offered through Christ, and the gift of charity through the Holy Spirit.
That's just the technical way of saying what Baylorboy did: Love.

dazimp 04-09-2003, 10:29 PM Living a life that glorifies the Lord. Short and simple. If you have given your life to Christ and truly believe that he died for your sins, and admit that you are a sinner, God will work from the inside to make you a better person IF YOU ASK HIM TO. God wants a relationship with you. Just remember that there is no universal definition for a "Good Christian". God loves everyone the same, even those who arent Christians.

ChevyGal 04-09-2003, 11:49 PM Hmmm my go at it here. Like was mentioned before, there really isn't a universal definition, but I can try to make it make sense (I hope) for anyone who never really thought about Christianity and what being a Christian is about.
Anyhow.... for starters, and this the key here, you need to have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior. You then will ask Him into your life, to forgive you of all your sins and admit you are a sinner.
From there you try too:
Go to church to fellowship with your other believers. You go to learn more about God and His plan for you. You go to learn about Jesus and his teachings, and understand why they are important. Kinda like you want to play a sport. You can't just take up that sport and never practice and expect to be good at it unless you learn and teach yourself about it. That is how church is to me... where I learn about God, and try to find out all I can so when I leave there I can be the person I want to be.
You read the bible. It's God word. You want to learn it and understand it the best you can. It teaches you about life, it teaches you about what others who have come before us went through. It helps to answer your questions. I've seen this acronym and I like it... to me it's fitting, BIBLE, Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.
You pray. It's how you thank God for all in your life. More often then not we use prayer as a way to ask God for things. That's cool, God likes it when we let go and let Him handle it. But you use it as a way to share with Him what is going on in your life.
You try to be Christlike. What I mean by that is you stop and think about stuff before you do it. Basically, the WWJD thing (yeah I know some people think that is a joke, but I think it's actually a nice idea). You try to be an example, and a positive one at that. So you try to do things that are good, kind and show others love. You want to glorify God with your actions and all that leaves your mouth. So that's what you aim to do.
You need to have faith. Without faith it's all pointless. You need to trust God, and allow Him to work in you.
Of course... being human, we ALL mess up. Some of us more then others. Nobody is perfect. I'll fully admit I sure am not. Being a Christian doesn't make anyone perfect. If someone thinks that, they are wrong. It means being forgiven. So when you do mess up... rather it be big or small it means all you have to do is ask Christ for forgiveness.
There's more I'm sure and know, but I won't go on much longer here.... anyhow, call me crazy, stupid or what have you for what I said.... I've been called it before. It's not about what the world thinks of me, it's what I think of me. I'm happy and comfortable in my decision. It's made me who I am today, and I am happy for that. I'm not ashamed to say I love Jesus. If that makes me a nut to some, then hey, I'm a nut. If anyone ever wants to find out more about this stuff... I'm willing to do my best to answer any questions (and I mean answer, not shove anything down anyone's throat. What you do what that info is up to you). I don't know it all, not close. But I can try my best and ask other people in my church if I get stumped. Anyhow.... enough from me... my 2 cents, take it for what it is worth...

Yeah, true. But what does that have to do with drinking? On the subject of carpentry and drinking, a friend was drunk and broke his coffe table, dont know how. He tried to make another tale (while still drunk out of his mind), only problem was it had 2 legs..we still dont know how he broke the first one.

indulf 04-10-2003, 08:08 AM im not a "free for all" christian, but im also not a stick in the mud.
its not about rules- what you can and cant do- but about your relationship with God.
in my opinion, everyone who believes and confesses that belief is a "good christian". in the eyes of God, all sins are equal, so my drinking and smoking and cussing is just as bad as some guy who never cusses, never drinks, and never smokes, who always goes to church and works hard, but never spends any time with his family and is a legalistic, rules-oriented, authoritarian asshole.

There are probably more folks out there who meet your suggestion of criteria than you think.. Although, I think the Church every day of the week cuts the numbers down significantly. Aside from that one, I don't think I am a hypocrite, and I have the rest covered.
That being said, I know many buddhist and muslims who don't drink, smoke, swear, and go to a mosque or temple every day of the week... so while they may not be good Christians, they are definitely good people, by that criteria.

Yep. Hence the church once a week thing, although we sometimes have other *functions* during the week and we somehow convince our high school age kids to wake up early to study religion before school every day. (Not all go, just some)

Dont lie.... (kidding)
You guys have alot to do... the 3 hours church, and then my mormon friends (who are priests apparently at the age of 16...) have the before school early morning stuff, and then the late night meetings for something else. Talk about a lot of work.

I wouldn't lie. I am Mormon... ;)
Those were the *other* functions, and, yes, there are a lot of them. Not to mention, we all have responsibility to visit 5-6 families in our area every month, to swing by, share a message, see if they need help with anything, etc....

Which is why you guys have the key or something. I am still sorta thinking that the door-to-door people preform some sort of miracle for you.... Either that or they dont tell the kids about waking up at 5 in the morning...:D

We hold off on that 5 am stuff as long as possible.... tends to discourage people.
I don't know how they get the kids to show up, to be honest, but if for some insane reason you are awake at 5am and swing by one of our church buildings (some places 6am) there will be a bunch of high school students there...
OTOH, everyone knows Mormon girls are good looking, so maybe the guys show up to hang with the girls, and the girls show up to be looked at.... ;)

I was needless to say, a little shocked... But when I thought about it, a good 90% of the mormons I know are blondes... The women that is...

How can you be a good Christian if you don't believe in Christ??
That being said, I think my Buddhist friends would be mildly offended to be called good Christians.
However, there are a lot of folks who live very good lives, strong morals and discipline, faith, and obedience to what they believe in. They are not Christian, but they are very pious and make excellent friends. Unfortunately, they are not much into the wheeling scene......

No, because they are not Christian. Just like I wouldn't be considered a good Buddist, because I am not Buddist. Same for Muslim and so on...
As for saying someone's religion other then mine is the devils work... I go by what the bible says. If they go against what the bible says and Gods word, then I would have to think their beliefs are wrong. But because I don't find any truth in what they believe, doesn't mean it would be ok for me to treat them badly. Just like I would want the same respect for my beliefs. I wouldn't be on the corner calling them out screaming at them hey you, devil worshipper, you are going to hell. That's not my place. I might share with them my beliefs, but not in a manor to be offensive. Of course at the same time you need to be willing to listen back to what they believe. You can't be a good teacher, unless you are a good student first...
