I just read over 50 posts on this, but still have a few ?'s

I am going to pick up an 8.8" rear axle this week... Heres what i have looked at so far...

The MORE kit is rather pricey i think for what it is.... Where can i get good axle perches for less cash? I can build my own u-bolt plates, not a problem...

Now for that Yoke, i found spicer part number 221379... Anyone find a better price than $50 on it?

And E-Brake cables? Seems alot of people have done the swap but not addressed the e-brake cables... Thanks, hugh

Oh yeah, i do not have an SYE and have not needed one as of yet (NP 207 t-case, manual tranny)... I had to make a front driveshaft, but it seems the rear will be cool.. Anyone think the off-centered pinion will be a problem?

I used the MORE pads only. Buy the 8.8" with the yoke and the ubolts. Then you can easily make your own u-bolt plates and custom shock mounts. The stock ones suck anyways, dont spend money on them. MORE sells ebrake cables that bolt up. I got the stock Explorer cables, but since I'm selling my Jeep I wont bother hooking them up. If you cant get the rearend witht he yoke, expect to pay about $50 for the yoke. Thats a fair price. I am running 6.5" lift on mine with the stock rear d-shaft, but with a machined down slip on a TJ yoke. It works fine, no binding and best of all no t-case drop. Hope this helps. Check out my site for pics.

Yeah, I checked out your site earlier... I won't be pulling the axle myself, they are already pulled in my area so i have no choice on the u-bolts and such... I was just curious how i could cut some corners here and there... I plan on making my own shock mounts for sure as i already have 45 degree mounts for my current axle....

***** My .02 is that you shouldnt cut corners on something as involved as this.

If you can, use a hole saw (3,25" to be exact) and some 2.5" tubing to make the perches. Cost me $7.

And I've found that most Spicer dealers sell the yoke(s)for $25-$30.

For an XJ, ZJ brake cables (whatever years had disc rears) will supposedly bolt right up. I was quoted something like $25 per side from my Jeep dealer.

you can buy perches from Mopar (most dealerships) for something like 15$ a pair. Just ask for perches for a 3" tube not for a particular application just the part.
I have the part# somewhere if you want it.

You don't need the MORE adapter yoke.
If you can get the Yoke that came with the axle, just by a conversion U-Joint. Mine was around $15.
I haven't hooked up my E-brake yet, so I don't know what to tell you, but I'd recommend the SYE...but you might be able to get away with out it. Just keep an eye on the u-joints

Lokar also sells an ebrake cable that will work for this application, but I too heard the ZJ cable would work (and be a lot cheaper). MORE should also sell you just the perches if that's all you need. Good luck.

I got my Yoke adapter from Tom Wood when I had my driveshaft made. $30. The driveshaft came with the adapter on it, so I was able to just bolt the DS right up (after, of course, making two trips to the hardware store to get the right bolts for that flange....).

As for ebrake cables, I used the ford ones for few weeks and then read a write-up on converting the D35 cables to work with the 8.8, that conversion worked great. Cost: $2 for a pair of 1/8" cable clamps. (this is on a TJ, don't know if the same would work on the YJ).

Late 80, early 90 mustang...pick n pull

Nope, but I would still do an SYE

You can cut a few corners. I used the RE anti-wrap pads and like them.

For the spicer yoke, go to Napa. I buy mine there. $24. Buy several, I've broken three of them in 7 months.

Not clear on your e-brake question. Does the axle not have the stock Ford cables? If so, you can fab a little plate to adapt them to your Jeep lines, which is what I did.

I personally would save up for an SYE and CV shaft, but it'll probably work without.

Thanks guys, i picked up an 8.8 today, brake to brake with all the cables for $371.00 out the door... Lets just say i was happy as hell... As far as he SYE, i don't really wanna spend that cash on my 207 transfer case, as i will either do a 231 with a 4to1 kit or an atlas... My parking brake is different than later models, as both left and right cables are the same length with them both meeting right above the rear driveshaft, i will look into the zj ones... No pik-n-puls around here at all, every thing on a shelf, id have to buy the whole rear driveshaft to get that yoke...

New question... What the hell is that Wire and plug thing on top of the diff? Anti-lock ring sensor maybe? I know i don't need it, jsut curious... Oh yeah, if anyone else wants these axles, i can get about 4 more at that cost here in NC...

I think im gonna go for the MORE Spring Pads, make my own shock mounts as well as the u-bolt plates...

I also need to regear it to 4.56 to match the front, so i might as well put in a real locker... Im thinking full-case detroit...

Thanks for all the info so far... Will let you know on the progress... Should be done completely in about 3 weeks or less... Hugh

The full Detroit is a very good idea.
The 8.8 stock carrier is the weakest link on the axle. The Detroit full carrier will eliminate that weak link.
Is your 8.8 axle, the, 31 spline, disk brake version?
That's a good price if it is.
Good luck with your swap, the 8.8 is a strong axle assembly.

Yep, got it with all the disk parts, cables, etc... I think that the detroit will be the way to go unless cash gets to be a problem, then i will just drop in a Lock-Right until i break something... Hugh

I'm almost afraid to ask if you know if Jeep dealers also carry spring perches for a TJ's axle. And if they carry those, do you know if they carry (or can get) shock, swaybar, and trackbar brackets? I'd call my dealer but this kind of stuff is way out of their league. I've had trouble getting them to find stuff for me even when it was just a standard part.

Considering Rubicon Express rips us off for $300 for a set of brackets to install an axle into a TJ, it'd be fawking amazing if it turned out that my dealer carried what I needed for the 8.8 conversion for a lot less $$.
