We just got the clutch back together, along with the tranny and t/c aligned and put back underneath the Jeep (TJ 4.0L). Now, when I tried to start 'er up, the engine turns over normally, but it won't start. We tried putting gas down inside the throttle body, to no luck, pulled a spark plug and saw that it was dry (but not corroded). I've been told to check the crankshaft position sensor, I just need to know where this is located (which one is it?). Also, could there be anything else wrong??
The CPS is located at the back of the engine on the side with the intake/exhaust manifolds near the bell housing(at least on a XJ 4.0). Sometimes if you unplug it then plug it back in it'll work. The plug has three pins(IIRC) that tend to get gummed up, try cleaning them then try and start the engine. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll try that, although I think it's on the other side on the TJ. Only sensor I saw over there was the O2 sensor going into the exhaust pipe by the header.

Don't take it out of the bellhousing unless you have an automatic. The manuals need a piece of paper to be inserted between the CPS and the teeth during installation.
If your fuel pump kicks on for one quick second, but then kicks off, the ECM is not getting a valid CPS signal.

Admiral,
It's definately on the drivers side about 11 O'clock looking from the back of the engine. Take another look.

I found it.......hanging from the engine block.......we just forgot it, so now it runs perfect, thanks for everyone's help with the clutch install and CPS. It's good to be back on the road, and to know how to take out and install a new clutch!

I've had a problem after I replaced my clutch that might be CPS related, let me know what you guys think?
Usually it will run fine, but every so often when I hit the clutch when making a stop, the engine just dies and I have to start it.
Not a huge deal but very annoying and I'm waiting for that to happen and it won't start back up. Any suggestions?

I don't believe that's CPS related. If the CPS is bad, you won't be able to start the Jeep at all. That's probably got something to do with the idle of your engine. I don't believe the old YJ's had that sensor, but hey, I don't know much about YJ's to begin with.:smokin:

It's got a CPS, '91 - '95 YJs are pretty much identical.
Someone was telling me its either the CPS or the VSS causing the problem....
