I'm interested in replacing the lifters only. Can they be accessed by removing the rocker arms and push rods (Haynes manual says the head can stay on but I dont know if I believe them yet).

This is my DD so I'd like to avoid removing the head.

If you could check a FSM for me, that would be cool.

Thank yee

Well, if the manual says you can, and the pictures demonstrate how to do it????? wtf are you waiting for ????:flipoff2:

Just note the tools required. I'm thinking a magnet on an extension or something similar to retreive the lifters from the block.:D

Bite me :D

The pics are of a 4 cylinder.

I read in an ORC BBS thread that the later model (YJ) 258s have rod passages big enough to get the lifters through.

then try it and stop biting peoples heads just because of your inhibitions. it won't hurt anything to try, especially if the maunual says you can:confused: :flipoff2:

A magnet might work but depending on the amount of sludge and crud in the lifter bore, you may need a lifter removal tool. It actually grips the inside of the lifter and holds on a lot better than a magnet will.

Why do you want to replace the lifters?

Are you that bored? :p

Yeah I guess it's boredom setting in. :D

My rockers/rods/lifters are really noisy and below 2000 rpm it feels like there is a valve or two that isnt opening. My engine is getting old and I am just buying time until I can get my 360 swap squared away.

I am gonna give it a shot and if I cant get the lifters out, oh well. I got one of those lifter removal tools. Should do the trick.

New valve seals are gonna go on while I'm in there.

:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: just for good measure

Your ticking isn't the lifters. It's that crappy non-adjustable rocker design. There is a way to fix it, but you have to be super careful. I had this with my CJ, and was faced with new cam, lifters, rockers and those damn bridge/tower/pivot/whatever things... an expensive undertaking. I say live with it.

I pulled the head and changed just the one noisy lifter and it cured that annoying ticking. Doesn't take long. Only need a head and valve cover gasket (or rtv). While the head was off, I sent it into a machine shop for other stuff that made the job worthwhile (now you need the intake / exhaust gasket set), but I was happy as hell to part with that sound that made my rebuilt motor sound like a p.o.s. I'd previously tried changing rocker arms, shiming it, changing push rod lenght to no avail. Of course, there's nothing to say that your problem is the same as mine.
