I am replacing my 258 with a new 258 goatfish posted to find out exactly which tranny I have since I have absolutly no clue. my jeep is an 89 wrangler islander (cheesy graphics included). well my dilemma is that I have the crappy carter carb on it now and I want to ditch it since it was the root of my problems the only thing is I really don't know what is out there for carbs. I am on a limited budget so I can't afford fuel injection or a real expencive carb. I have know weber and holley make carbs but havent heard much about them so I will take what ever input you can give me.

I'm running the Weber on mine. Made a big improvement over the carter. Once it got dialed in, it runs awesome w/ the TFI upgrade. Starts one the first try, holds a good idle, tune it and forget it. The only complaint is that it doesn't like big inclines. I've lowered the float, but its a trade off between off road and street performance. I haven't tried the Motorcraft 2100, but alot of people say its just as good. It can be picked up for alot less than the Weber, I wished I had tried it first just b/c of the cost. Do a SEARCH, I know I've seen this covered many times on here.

Howell Injection all the way. I installed a 4.3 system on mine 4 years ago and haven't touched it since (nock on wood). That thing will run at any angle probally even upside down. A buddy of mine ran a Weber and wished he had went ahead and spent the extra for the Howell system. His Weber ran good but was no comparison to fuel injection. Start's up no matter what the temp, runs at all angles, no flooding no tuning, etc, etc and if you are running power brakes and steering there is no need to worry about stalling. Did I mention it is really simple to install. Good luck. ;)

on my old carter I was also having trouble on inclines untill Installed a Fuel Pressure Regulator ($15). Turn it down to about 1 or 2 pounds depending on if you like to throttle up the hill more psi for more throttle. The regulator will help keep the bowls from filling up to quickly.

A lot of people suggest the Motorcraft 2100. I just got mine in the mail last week (haven't been able to install it) but I ordered it from autobone on the internet. Got mine by looking up a 1978 AMC AMX with the 304 V8. Paid less than $160 total. People also suggest junk yards... would probably be a lot cheaper.
