Anyone flat towing with a dana 300 transfer case? I was told the book says to keep it under 200 miles. I was also told there is a company that makes an impeller that keeps the case lubricated while towing. I'm just looking for a cheap way to tow my jeep around.
Thanks

You have 2 choices with a d300. Pull the rear shaft or put a full floater kit. Pulling the rear shaft is quick and easy. 4 bolts on the diff yoke and tie it up.

Is it safe for 200 miles like the book says or is that just asking for problems?

I prefer to be safe then sorry. Can you trust the book, I don't know??? Your t-case has ZERO oiling although it's internals are spinning when flat towing. You make the call.

If it dosen't self oil I will probably pull the drive shaft. Does anyone know about the impeller you can buy to turn it into a self oiler? 4WD Hardware told me about it but they didn't know who made it.

I think its Tri-county welds small propellor pieces on one of the gears, so when it turns, it splashes oil all over inside.

I've also heard that if you lock your front hubs the front output will turn and provide plenty of splash to lubricate everything.

Well I just happen to have experienced what happens when you leave your driveshaft conected. You look for a new transfercase. I flat towed my Wrangler with a Dana 300 to Big Bear a couple weeks ago and made it about to Apple Valley Around 120 miles and POW she loose. Craked it practically in half. So I would suggest pulling the drive shaft even though it is a pain in the arse. At least you will make it to the trail before you break something <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

another option is to install a "clocking ring" which allows you to swing the low end of the 300 into a more horizontal position. This not only allows the gears to be bathed in oil all the time, but it also gains a lot of ground clearance...

Tri-County does not sell the paddle collars(on the shift collars not the gears) anymore, to many people bitched about the price so he quit making them. Took him 5hrs to make.

Clock the 300, get better clearance and make it towable. You can redrill or buy the ring.

Or make your own paddle collars

My buddy smoked his case flat towing to the con all the time. It's a pain but I would pull the drivelines out.

Yep, Froze the 300 and took out the ring and pinion after about 100 mi @ I5 Speed. Take off the drive shaft or put in (un)locking Full floaters. The Atlas copies the 300 design and may also be subject to the same problem, although I've never heard of a failure.
