Another reason to get a 14 bolt

The perches failed pulling on a stump. When the axle rotated up the yoke busted.

looks like bad welds on the perch or degree shims caused this....

Shims/wedges caused this. It had nothing to do with the axle.

Shims fawkin suck. They mess everything up.

The welds look OK but I will know more when I get the axle out.
I'll be getting rid of those shims when I put the new perches on. I did a search but couldnt find any info or pics of these failing.
I'm also going to flip the u-bolt configuration.

most definately don't put new shims in. Keep the damn things out. When i bought my truck it had 2 stacked in front. Broke my center bolts, one fell out, etc.

If I would have been on the road, or if I would have been going at ANY speed, I would have been in some big ass trouble.

I hate those damn things!

Stock 12 Bolt perches are weak. Contact www.mo-offroad.com and order a set of perches.

Hell that axle tore itself apart trying to pull that stump, its better than a shaft breaking or the RnP craping out! You got away easy!

Yep, couldve been alot worse. $240 so far. Thats new yokes for the pinion and driveshaft.
The perches had indentations in them from the shims and the front ubolts were stripped.

Shoot, 240 bucks would have got you well on the way to a 14 bolt. I know it cost more than that by the time you do gears and all but youll wish you had not put more money into a rear end youll end up getting rid of anyway. Just my .02. :)

I wouldn't put any money in to a 12 bolt. Just put all that money in to a 14ff. 1/2 ton sucks.

The really sad part is I have a 14 bolt from a 1ton van. Along with a caddy500. Im collecting parts for the big swap later.
Oh well, its good practice for when I have to change perches on the 14.

I'd go to a 500 Caddy, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get it up that high. Maybe jack it up from the bottom?

We use a ceiling mounted engine hoist when we do that stuff.

I wish I had access to an overhead hoist. Hell, I might do a pulley system over a tree or something if I ever get my engine built. SBC will do for now until I get the Rockwells and everything in this summer.
