: custom coils and driveshaft/crossmember interference

I've got two questions I need to figure out for the end of my solid axle swap. My shocks are going to allow about 20" of vertical travel at the hub, so I need to get a set of coils that will handle that. I assume I'm going to need progressive coils? I don't want them to be so soft that it's really unstable on the street, I'm thinking around 400-450 ft-lbs at ride height. Who should I contact to do this sort of thing? I assume I'd need to provide a minimum length, a maximum length, length at regular ride height, weight of the vehicle at that corner, and ft-lbs at ride height? Anything else? I can cut my upper coil brackets and lengthen them fairly easily, raising the top mount point by around 4".

The second question is regarding my front driveshaft. I'm fairly sure I'm going to need a high-angle CV to get the necessary droop. My transmission crossmember is going to interfere with the driveshaft when it's drooping, however. What's the best way to deal with that? Build a loop into the crossmember?

Thanks for any ideas. Pics for what I'm dealing with are at http://www.soderblom.net/bronco/tech/D44solid

400-450!! That sounds like an awful lot. You can call National Spring up(I can't remember who makes their coils now), tell them what you are looking for and they will help you decide how to get the best performance. Unless you want it to be as tall as a monster truck you will probably need to raise your coil buckets.

Wether or not you need to modify the xmember depends on how far up and how far down the axle will travel. You'll just need to set the truck at the ride height you want and check out the motion of the DS. I didn't have to do anything to mine(except shorten it because the D60) with my coilovers and I'm running about 10"droop and 6" compression.

according to superlift, stock for my 89 is 450. For a 79 it's 400. They may be wrong tho. I figure I'll just tell whomever I end up getting the coils from what I plan to use the truck for, and see what they recommend.

Right now the coils I have are 6" superlift for a 79, I'll get it drivable using those and then see where I want to go with it.

I heard Tom's bronco parts was gonna start selling sum soft coils for fullsize straight axle fords....

I'm running the superlift 6" springs for a 79 of my 86 F150....Even with the extra weight of the 460 and winch they need to be a little softer. Even with the weight of the 60 and 38.5 swampers pulling on them they don't droop much at all. I've been thinking about custom springs....but think I'll hold out until I save enough to go coilovers.

So would superlift tell you what there 6" springs were?? There there much stiffer than the OEM springs

They told me that their 6" coils had the same springrate as the stock coils.

Interesting. Any idea what the stock coils are, ft-lbs-wise?
