I did a search and could not find an answer to my question. What vehicle do I need to look for to get the best 700r4 for my application. TIA

well, what is your application? best ones are the late 80's, 2wd can be changed to 4wd.

I'm gonna put it in a '99 TJ sport. I'm having problem finding one though - all the junkyards around here don't have them. So, if I can't find one, how about a TH350 or TH400? I found them completely rebuilt - which one is better and why? I'm gonna go with an Atlas2 transfer case.

TIA

the 700r4 is cool because of the overdrive and the first gear ratio is lower then a standard non over drive trans. if you cant find one and you have to pick between the 350 and the 400 go the 400 theres alot of options on this trans i.e lower first ratios ect and they handle a lot of abuse too..if you go with the 400 dont forget the kick down swith ................................................:f lipoff2:

I've been thinking about getting my next Tranny from these guys:

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperflist.htm#700R4

For $1500 plus $50 for the 4WD option, I think that is a good deal. Considering most shops I've talked to want over $750 + core (or more) for just a rebuild (with stock parts) And, this tranny comes with a HD Torque Converter... the local shop versions don't.

The only question I have now is if I should go with a Vortec V-6/4L60E or SBC TBI/700R4 combo...

sounds high to me 1500$

I see ads for rebuile 700r4's here in dallas for 500 im sure that any qualifted tranny builder could take this tranny and put a update kit, shift kit, and any torque converter you want for under 1000$
what about
4.0L - SM465 - Dana 300 - 60's -

A 700R4 from anything after 87 is ok but 88 and up is better. There are still updates to do when they are rebuilt to prevent breakages but they are minor compared to what is necessary in the earlier ones. You should be able to have one rebuilt for around $1000 including a reman torque convertor but not any extra stuff like shift kits.

After 86 GM had fixed all the 'problems' that existed with the 700r4's. Easy place to find on would be under a camaro. HTH

some things you are going to want to put in are heavy duty clutch pack (i beleive 10 disk) for the overdrive and a corvette servo and the usual valve body work. try summit racing or hotrod type mags for adds.

i believe it was an '88 with a 305ci. it was a gm factory rebuilt not the original so who knows what upgrades it has. he put a 350/400 out of a wrecked 3/4 ton he came across. i beleive any v8 auto 1/2ton past 86 will have one, but the 88's and up are better.

I wouldn't advise having your trans rebuilt at just any trans shop, or even buying from them without checking into their work first. Most trans shops barely know their head from their ass.

Finding a good one is a chore in itself!!

Ihave a 700r4 out of a 90 4.3 s-10blazer in my 89 yj it works great .Ibought it from a recycler in rancho cordova ca for 500.00 with a 231 tc .I still have the stock converter in it ,I just bought a speed adjustable lock-up kit by B&M from SUMMIT racing. it comes with a VSS that installs between your speedo cable and t/c. It works great, the torque converter dosn't lock up until i'mon the freeway (55-60 mph).Make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly .Wide open throttle, cable fully extended !

I'm pullin' out my hair here. A ragazine I just picked up this weekend had a decent article in it on finding and rebuilding TH700R4's.

... problem is, I can't remember which ragazine it was (it's sitting on the crapper at my g/f's place). Go to your newstand and look for a 4wd ragazine with a desert sand colored A1 (I think it's an A1, I can't quite tell from the rear shot) on the cover.

The article gives info on what cores to look for as well as sources for parts and instructional videos.

Get one from a 87 or newer and from a full size PU or Blazer not a S10 because the case is heaver and you can put the heaver tork converter cover on for more suport.
