In California, there is a thing called a "Lean Sale". A friend of mine owns a storage yard. He can take a vehicle, go through the proceeses, which include filing paper work for the county or state, advertising an auction for the vehicle etc. After the auction, it is like a new vehicle. All of the old registration problems are gone and a new title is issued.
Advantage: If you have a vehicle that is way out of registration, it may take lots of $$$ to get it current. If he takes the vehicle and does the lean sale it only cost about $150 to get it back legal.
The trick is, no one else knows about the auction except for you. So no one can drive the bids up.
Obviously this only works amongst friends.

I believe you can file with the state for a lost title, just make sure
you get a bill of sale, although I hear this takes awhile

Or you can get a title from someone that has cut up their toy and still has the pink and plates for it.....
