: 66 CJ popping out of first

I think it's a T98, not sure. My bosses old CJ wont stay in first. He does not think the shifter is obstructed. With his hand on the shifter, he can feel it "pushing itself out of gear with force". It only happens in first gear and under load. The tranny was just rebuilt too. I'm not up on vintage CJ's so I was no help. Anyone have a clue? Thanks.

When I 1st rebuilt my NP435, it did the same thing, it would slowly walk out of 1st gear under load, then "Bam", and it would pop out.
When I had to recently replace the busted case, I spent closer attention to the gear tollerances on the shaft, and shimmed accordingly. Now its "like butter",...shifts smoother, and never tries to walk out of gear.

Ha.... ha. If you only knew. Do you drink beer and wheel with your boss? Can you not show up to work on any given day and your boss does'nt even ask you why? Has your boss ever told you, and this is a direct quote "I dont care if you play golf 3 days a week, as long as I'm not getting calls from people you're neglecting" ? I did'nt think so. Nice try mall parking lot wheeler.

Thanks Jeff for REAL imput. I think you're right, as I illuded to, it may not have been built right. I have'nt seen it yet, so we'll start dig'n. I was really fishing for an "oh, that's the ol' (thingamagiggy) in the wrong place". It's never easy is it.

Thanks Joop.

Here's some I.D. help from the AA manual ..

"Jeep Manual Transmissions ...
T98A 4 Speed 1955-73
This transmission can be identified by the case length of 11.875" and a casting number of T98. The shift cover is mounted on the top of the case with 6 bolts."
The guide also sez it has a 6.40 grannie 1st!
No wonder it wants to pop out!

Yup. I shoved it in there for him. It's a 90 that was converted (via imput shaft) to a 98 but that was two years ago. I'm going off my (comprimised by combustion) memory.
I carry the same AA cat you do almost everywhere I go. I browse it everywhere I go, dentist, MD, court (dont ask) etc. It's my bible. Thanks man.

Hey Loppy....actually the funny thing is that my supervisor in the AF does have a Jeep...and I help him do his work, too. I'll admit I'm rookie, but I am smart enough to check in on this thread and read the info that is posted. I knew that you would appreciate the , so I threw in my comment. Sorry to clog up your thread with BS newbie comments......I'll just smile to myself next time!

This is a common problem on the earlier T84 and T90 transmissions, of which your T98 is similar.

It's always excessive mainshaft end play when it jumps outta gear.

If you need more help call my ole Boss at Army Jeep Parts Inc..215-788-6012 sales@armyjeepparts.com

Good Luck..
