: Electrical problems

If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it.

'87 Zuki, stock 1.3, carb, no mods to the engine.

Heres the problem: I took the Zuki out swimming last September rather unexpectidly(got sucked into a DEEP mud hole, the mud line is over the drivers window down diagonally to about 10" above the floor on the passenger side). I developed a beep under the intrument panel imediatly fallowing it stalling out. (it stalled AFTER I was pulled out) The beep went away after I got the interior wiring dried out, but the warning lights on the Instrument cluster are lit up now (the Brake, altenator, and Sensor lights) they burn constantly but do flicker a bit as well. the Altenator will not charge the battery, but produces power to run the engine with a dead battery.

What I have done:

I have cleaned all the wire conections under the hood and dash, taken the altenator off and cleaned the windings and what ever else I could get to and checked all the conections I could find in the wire harness and computer.
the problem still persists(warning lights).

The engine did suck a little water, just not enough to hydro it, and it runs fairly well,(just blows a bit more smoke than it used to  ) The warning lights have gone off for a few seconds a few times, and the Engine ran Sooo much better(smoothed out alot), and the altenator showed a charge, but it has only happened twice.

any sugestions here? I have a trip comming up soon and need this fixed.

pull the dash pot out and look for a short where the plug goes in to the back of the dash do you have a spare computer???? just a thought

Pull "all" connectors apart. Flush them with alcohol, or a circuit cleaner. Blow everything dry with air run through a moisture trap. Pull dash pod and exam land patterns with magnifying glass for shorts or opens. Do the same with computer, or better, swap it with a known good unit. Make sure to check the backside of the fuse block. Clean and have both alternator and starter checked.
You basically have a short somewhere. That's why it ran soooo much better when the lights went out and the alternator showed a charge. Something is drawing the voltage down.
Have you checked all your grounds? If not do that too.
Another way to try and find it is to pull all fuses except the start and run circuits. With it running add 1 fuse at a time until it starts to run crappy.
If this don't work you be :flipoff2: . Go back to top and do it again, examining everything closer until you find it.:D

Spay wiring and junctions with WD-40(water displacement) then if still not working take gauges apart and dry out.

LOL personally I prefer to neuter those pesky little things:D

seriously though, what Sfrans said is good advice Orionn- try to do as much as possible via the "one circuit at a time" method.

Electrical probs can be some of *the* most frustrating things out there! (for me anyway...)

have you got the OEM manuals with wiring diagrams? that's a must.

If you don't already, keep an electrical fire rated extinguisher handy in your vehicle now!

good luck:(

Take it easy....

Thanks guys...I already have the wiring Diagram and a fire extenguisher. As for 'wet' connections....Uhhh there all dry, I swamped it seven monts agon , last september, and evryone I pulled was dry, a few corroded, cleaned those. cleaned the starter, the Altenator is fine, from what i can tell, going to take it off and get it checked. I still need pull a few more plugs and circuts. I am just getting frusrated, and was wondering if someone here has had the same issue with the warning lights. Ill keep all of you posted
thanks
mark :D

Don't be *toooo* sure that everything is all nice and toasty:D there are quite a few connections that are inside various wiring loom sections, not just terminus points at the plugs.

I was having consistant probs and when I undid the factory taping up under my dash (driver's side) I found moisture and corroded splice connections a good foot and a half up from the connector plugs!! No exaggeration- I was totally surprised as this was months after my dunking too.

what I would start with really though, is to chuck the stock main ground wire from neg battery post to engine block and replace with a 1 guage cable, making *damn* sure the connection at the engine is clean and bolt point surface emery clothed up!

27" to 32" is more than long enough, and will make a world of difference for less than ten dollars and ten minutes time.

OK, I will look for non terminated conections elsewhere. I already have a heavy ground going to the block and the body, yea it helped alot. I fear that I will have to pull the whole Instrument panel, though it looks rather easy to do and get back in correctly. Its a time and ambition thing there.

thanks again
