Whatever it was had a Ford engine in it. Notice the free "oil" rust protection.

note the SOA, the closed knuckles, nothing underhangs the diff centre, weird front casing on the diff

closed knuckles, id say, definitely not USA or jap!! maybe euro?

I have seen one of those before on a swamp truck in alaska but I have no idea what it is. I wonder what size joints are in it???

I am thinking drop-out third member maybe...I see no bolts on the front to suggest it comes off that way...Also looks to be solid cast, then drilled out for axle shafts.

Why not usa? older jeeps came with closed knuckle fronts.. like the dana 27. It looks like some of the industrial marmon herrington axles from back in the day... Theres not much in the picture to compare the size of it to..but id say it was in a pretty heavy truck by lookin at the leaf packs.. whats that, like 14 - 16 leaves in there?

And unless I'm looking at it wrong the steering box is on the USA (driver) side. HMMMM Buuuut the pic is hosted in sweden. :D

By looking at rims and tire tread pattern in the dirt behind the tire, I'd say a 15" rim and maybe a 33" tire...I really cant tell though.

also looks like it had a V-something engine in it judging from the exhaust pipes.. Im also starting to wonder about the huge crossemember that the exhasut pipe comes through on the left.. and why it has a large hole in the middle...

Looks awfully Marmon Herrington to me.....and how often to you hear that phase?

the diff tubes look almos like square Rockwell-esque type units, but being from Sweden it could be some sort of GAZ or something.

My bet is also a Marmon Harrington, that was used in a Chevy truck to make a four wheel drive conversion in the mid 60's. The Chevy truck is the only one I remember that ran the exhaust pipe through a hole in the frame crossmember.

i dont thinkits a chevy 4x4 conversion. my friends dad had a 4x4 66 chevy napco conversion, and the axle was diffrent, plus the leafs were diffrent. those in the pic look skinny and there are way to many. the axle did have closed knuckles, but non removable 3rd member. got me

FWD INDUSTRIAL AXLE ???

BJ On Roids
04-22-2003, 09:37 PM
that diff is welded not cast,

id say it looks a bit narrow too

I suggested not american, as you guys are pretty fond of your bolt on front covers, and open knuckles, japanese are fond of there gear, and it has bits of all of each

looks way old, probly gay and weak...leave it behind.

I'd also say Marmon Herrington, no clue what from...

Roids: remember old school military trucks have closed knuckles and drop out diffs, like the M37 and larger. But I doubt this is military, probably industrial, like a 1960s logging truck of some brand....

Napcos do have removeable 3rd members my dads 59 chevy has them. They also have a removeable cover so that might have thrown ya off:p

Being from Sweden, it's gotta be a HD Volvo truck axle.

I could be wrong.

I know thats it's definitely Swedish military because of the Goodyear Studded Suregrip tires. I believe that the leaf springs on the Sugga went under the axle, but I could be wrong. That would suggest that the axle above is from the VALP.

I say it's a Volvo VALP axle. Here's a little info that I dug up on the VALP axles:

"Aren't the axles used on the Valp Dana 44..?
You often hear that the axles on the L3314/L3315 were manufactured by the american Dana Company and of the model 44 (Dana 44). The axles on the Valp were in fact manufactured by Salisbury Transmission LTD, Birmingham England. The Salisbury Wheel Company was founded in Jamestown, New York in 1901 and in 1919 the company was bought by Spicer. The Spicer group changed in 1946 name to Dana Corporation and Spicer became a productname. In 1970 The Salisbury Axle Group changed it's name to Spicer Axle Division. As You can see there are plenty of relations, but the axles are NOT Dana but Salisbury, model 4HS-001-85 front and model 4HA-00-92 rear. The front axle was replaced during the later part of the 60's, so early L3314 have a front axle with an other number, do not know which one."

This is a photo of a Sugga that clearly shows the springs under the axle. You'll have to cut and paste the URL since geoshities will not let you link from a BBS.

I've got my fingers crossed.

Acutally I'm going to change my vote: I'm also going to jump on the Volvo military wagon:

Vacuum locker
closed knuckles
Suregrips
11 or 13mm fill plug
funky Spring perches and over built shock mounts.

What throws a person off:

Odd banana arm steering,
Narrow springs.

1950s or 60s volvo?

Hehe, It's my latest find :) -Gonna use the axles for my buggy.

Its not Volvo Laplander (C903)

Its not Volvo Sugga (TP21)

But its CLOSE :flipoff2:

Its Volvo 912, The volvo suggas bigger brother that shares the same axles -The Laplander have D44's.

Info here: http://www.foreningenp5.com/hjulfordon.htm

Actually i now have two fronts and two rears (1 rear with left-diff and one with right-diff) -Theres no centre-diffs aviable on these kind of axles. The sugga have drivers drop both front and rear.
