Apparently they go trid of the AX-15 in the latest TJ's; swapped it for an NV3550.

Is this tranny any beefier/lower first gear/shorter/better????

Yes, yes, no and maybe.

Regarding better....

This tranny has had it's share of problems with shifting difficulty. This seems to have been fixed with any future production. It was first introduced in the 2000 model and is still being used.
