Looking to regear my 96 Disco and add traction at some point and the Toyota diff swap seems interesting and possibly a lot cheaper than Rover parts.

Has anyone actually completed this conversion yet?

I read this great thread (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73972&perpage=25&pagenumber=1) but there was never any followup?

I did finish the modfication but have been a bit side tracked (and slack) to post the rest of the pics. Heres a couple of the finished product.

front housing - amazing how much you can shave off them with only an 8in crownwheel.

Only tricky bits are allinging the new centre to mark the holes in the housing to redo the studs to suit the toy 3rd, boaring the spindles and swivels and machining a step and new bolt pattern in the toy flanges to fit the stock rover DSs.

Very cool stuff StrangeRover! and thanks for the pix.

I'd like to see a parts list and machine work detail of what you guys actually did. Diffs and axles are obvious; which CV's, what other machine work, etc? I know a lot was theorized in that long thread, but I'd like to hear the details from those who've done the mod.

parts and other work
toy v6 rear diff

toy r/c front diff

drill rover driveshaft bolt pattern in flange and have opening enlarged for d/s centering ring

drill toy bolt pattern in rover housing weld close the old holes
plug two unused holes in toy diff (only 8 out of 10 work)

bore stub axles and swivel balls two allow larger axle

custom axle shafts toy splines at one end and your cv and drive flange at the other
hope this helps

sure you could it might even be easier you will lose the full float, (you may be able to convert it). it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. however if i was to swap a complete axle in it would be a dana axle or some portals.

Toy housing has centred rear pumpkin, drum brakes and Im fairly sure that the toy axles are a fair bit narrower than the rover ones (never actually measured one but this is my understanding).

This mod is a lot easier to do than a complete axle swap although may not be as cheap (this really depends on how much work you can do yourself)
