: Hey Merv, My ball joint is stuck!!
JSBriggs 04-22-2003, 10:41 PM Thats right, I can't get the A frame ball joint apart from the axle housing. Every thing is disconnected an it is just hanging there. Tried a pry bar, BFH, talking to it nicely, nothing worked. Any ideas?
-Jeff
EDIT: While I appreciate humor, I am looking for serious ideas as well
DieLucas! 04-22-2003, 11:06 PM You need to remove the nut holding the ball-joint on the axle...:flipoff2:
Nothing a little heat (plus BFH) can't fix :D
Serious One 04-22-2003, 11:12 PM TRy driving it around for a while. You'll find out when it comes out pretty quickly. :flipoff2:

Make sure you are entered in the Drive-Line give-away...:flipoff2:
Serious One 04-22-2003, 11:28 PM Well, smarty pants...if you could f-in read you'd see that it plainly states in the LR factory manual to "remove rear prop shaft prior to attempting any ball-joint removal via driving around on washboard road whilst large locking nut is removed".
IF you left your rear drive shaft on while attempting this removal prodecure it'd serve you right to ruin it.
(sheeshe, f-in RR newbies)
JSBriggs 04-22-2003, 11:40 PM Let me clarify a bit. This is the 'white Range Rover on blocks in the driveway" truck. Not much chance of this moving under its own power anytime soon. The hot wrench isn't an option as I don't have one.

HEY SLADE!!!...isn't this YOUR club? ( would you like another cup of tea Mr. Biggelsby???) :flipoff2:

Got Mapp Gas? A torch from Home Depot shouldn't run too much...otherwise, eat some spinach and break out the BFH again!
Serious One 04-23-2003, 12:08 AM Damn, and I thought I had it all figured out for Jeff.
:D
DieLucas! 04-23-2003, 12:12 AM And if that doesn't work, I KNOW I can rig something up with a couple of relays, bailing wire, and some old chewing gum that'll do the job...
BFW every time.
Like a BFH but a BFW.
And what's going on here? "Biggest and stiffest", ball problems, Need more than 10" in front?
Is this some kind of "lets put merv into overdrive and see what happens day?" :flipoff2:
J bradley 04-23-2003, 08:23 AM I leave in the morning for Dublin ( a hopefully SARs free Aer Lingus flight ) I will drive up to Portrush for golf and a family visit and a trip to the Bushmills distillery...
Any big offroad events happening on your side of the pond in the next 2 weeks I should try to get to ?
Naturally, I will try to rent a LR of some kind for the drive.. and if it's insured I might as well have some fun with it :D :D :D

alia176 04-23-2003, 08:54 AM The "nut" that DieLucas is referring to is castellated with a cotter pin and the socket size 1 3/16". You might get lucky and impact the sucker right off. The socket won't fit the nut perfectly but it should still come off. During the previous two A arm jobs, the nuts came off thisway.
Assuming you're going to be replacing the BJ eventually, you'll need the cut the ears off of the BJ flange and stick the whole thing in a press. A sawsall is great for cutting the ears off. All of this will make sense once you have A arm out of the truck. In the mean time, go liberal on the PB Blaster.
Puffdragon 04-23-2003, 09:10 AM Ok, lets make sure you are using your BFH right. You should be hitting the tapered collar that teh ball joint shaft goes through. You should hit it on the side perpendicular to the ball joint bolt/shaft. If you havea freind, a little pry bar between the axle and the a- arm will make it more noticible when it pops out. You can pound on the ball joint it self all day long, but it will never come out. A little heat from a simple propane torch will help as well.

There can be :-)
Keep Sunday free. There may be a kind of impromptu rig bashing going on, Not 100% sure yet.
The only crowd I know that rents LR gear is one of the dealers - and I cannot recall which one just now. I'll search if your serious?
How long are you here? How strict is your schedule?
Weekend after this one there is a 4x4 trials event in the North that I've to go up to (I'm the 4x4 trials championship register). your welcome to come for the spin if your not busy. And dont mind travelling in a 110. :flipoff2:

Thats where I has hitting it. I'll eat some wheaties today and try again tonight. If it still won't go, Ill remove the Aframe and use the two handed hammer once its out from underneath the truck. To qoute myself, All it needs is just a little luvin' and it'll go.
Thanks

J bradley 04-24-2003, 11:23 AM Thanks, but no LR rental this trip - Budget rent-a-car laughed when I asked for one...I guess budget and land rover in the same sentence is a bit of an oxymoron... I will only be in Dublin for the day then drive straight to Portrush, at some point I'll head back down the eastern coast via Belfast, Rostrevor, Newry, Warrenpoint and hop the train back to Dublin.. no real set dates or times ( it is a vacation!)
Please post-up where the trials are to be held and the exact dates/ times and copy the info to my email at Tallbrad@hotmail.com and I'll try to make it there.. There's an old lwb Izuzu Trooper Diesel 4x4 in Portrush I can get my hands on , if the trials are anywhere near and it hasn't rusted to dust I'll see if I can't make it over to watch... thanks
 JB
JSBriggs 04-24-2003, 01:28 PM For those interested I had to remove the A frame. Once I had the assembly out of the truck, and had some swinging room, well...lets just say 'it was glad to come apart'.
On to the next task!
