I've got a '79 CJ7 with a T-18 trans and Dana 20 T-case. I just replaced the clutch and for reasons unknown there is a "new" noise coming from the trans. The thing whines after going uphill and I decend down the hill. Heck, now it's even whining at stop signs when the motor is cold and is idling high. Yes, I put the recommended weight and amount of gear oil in the trans. Whine does seem to be coming from the tranny. Any thoughts?

Did you replace the throwout and pilot while doing the clutch?

Yup, Replaced both. Used a Centerforce clutch. depressing the clutch pedal doesnt seem to make the noise go away, but giving throttle as I go down a hill (asphalt) does make it a little quieter.

sure it's tranny and not an altenator that's crapping on you or a vacuum leak?

My YJ, did the whine noise under similar conditions, replaced the altenator on a hunch and it went away.

Good thought. It sure sounds like the trans but I'll get my passenger to use my special Jeep approved stethescope that NASA designed to look for problem noises on the space shuttle and find the true source of that fawkin' noise.
