I am going to be at Sand Mt this next weekend (May 3 & 4th), and was wondering what kind of crowds to expect?

well it's not a holiday weekend so it's not going to be sick, crazy, out of hand, people getting hurt, tires rolling down the hill on fire kind of weekend.
but it is growing in popularity even on off weekends now-a-days so i am gonna guess at maybe 15 to 30 camps with a little bit of competition on drag hill and not much traffic out in the back dunes.
what are you running out there? quad? bike? paddles? it's about 3,000 to 3,500 feet if you wanted to know for jetting.
also there is a gas station in fallon now that sells trick fuel. i've never tried it. so if you do tell us how it runs.

Thanks for the info. I was out there Feb '02, and did a mix of paddles and regular tires. Oh, and I ride a Honda TRX400EX. Which station sells Trick up there? I just bumped the compression, and now would like to run 50% Trick, 50% premium mix.
When I was there last year I did have a blast, but I could hardly turn the paddles. Hopefully this year will be different!

i can't remember the name of the station but it was a gas station and it had a sign outside advertising it. going through town it was on the right hand side i think it was about 2 blocks or so before the hospital.
also for better power. regear! regear! maybe put a one tooth less counter sprocket on. i have found that raiseing the number of teeth on the back sprocket is better, but for last minute gearing try one tooth off the front sprocket. it's the cheaper and easier way.
you just need to practice starting in second.

with paddles, i didn't have enough power down two teeth in the front!

what brand, type and number of paddles were you running? what air pressure?
maybe one down in the front and 5 more in the rear. have to start modifiying the chain guides and buy a longer chain at that piont though.
are you going to try a different paddle? for a 400 ex i would say to try some 6 or 5 paddle skat trak haulers. i run both 9 paddles and 6 paddles on my banshee and i can really feal the difference. i'm still playing with them though. i like the 9's for duning and the 6's for dragging. the freaking thing stands straight up in the air when i start with th 9 paddles i have to let off then and i lose the hole shot. the 6's let my wheels spin a little more and i can pull 5th up drag hill.

I was using 8 paddle tires. The sand was really wet at the time too. I'm not too worried about it at this time, the tires are free, and that is about all I have to spend on tires.

hey i'm going to be going up to the mountain in a month or two.(nothing planned yet) and if you are gong to be there i have some 7 paddles you could try. they're on some douglas blue label rims that have both honda and yamaha bolt patterns on them. so it'd be easy to bolt them on and try them out.
i'll post up when we have somthing more solid planned.
maybe JJ will be able to go so i can roost his 500LT.
Just a reminder, it's 20 bucks a vehicle at sand mountain.

are they inforcing all of those rules that have been on that new sign yet?
you know the ones that say that there is a sound limit and spark arrestors required.
those are pretty dumb rules for out there. the closest building from there is the salt wells whore house and i don't think they can here the bikes. and what in the heck is gonna burn out there.
spark arrestor at sand mountain.........what ever.

the huge crowds were over easter....I have never seen that many people there and hot chicks :P....at least 100 people hanging at comp hill at dusk.......also first time I had to pay $20 to get in.....and rangers had a post set up and were everywhere the whole time (usually they come once every other day or so) but they didn't do shit, there was mass amounts of double riding (me too ) tons of helmetless riders, lots of missing flags and they stopped no one just waved......been going there every major holiday for 7yrs or so

I was just up there during the last weekend of February and the fee wasn't in effect yet. Also for a nothing weekend in winter there was @ 1,000 people up there. Not to many for that place but I was surprised.
Who, What, How to pay for the $45. annual fee? up there or mail and do we get a sticker for the truck or what?
