on my 85 chevy 2wd, what do i need to convert the FRONT to 8 lug? it is a half ton. are the control arms the same as the 3/4 ton 2wd's? are the spindles different? knuckles? it would be really nice if the hubs would just "bolt" on for 8 lug :) thanks for any help. i am getting a 14 bolt for the rear. so i would like matching bolt patterns, and i searched abotu converting to 5 lug 14 bolt...doesn't look fun.
thanks

Get an entire front suspension crossmember from a 3/4 or 1-ton. The 1/2-ton control arm shafts are a different diameter and bushed with rubber rather than bronze. Bigger balljoints as well and beefier spindles, brakes, etc.

Wow, perfect timing! Just so happens I'll be picking up an 83 C30 next week! I'll be scavanging the rear axle, wheels, engine/trans/steering and hydra brake setup. I don't envision needing the front end parts. If you're interested, let me know and we'll see if a deal can be worked out. I'm located in Endicott, NY

are the 1 ton frames same as the 1/2 ton? i know the 3/4 ton stuff will bolt on, but wasn't sure if there was a width difference or anything with the 1 ton. i know the frames are thicker, but i'm assuming that doesn't affect the mouting locations. just looking for confirmation before i start spending pointless $$

1-ton frames use 8" channel under the cab, whereas the 1/2 and 3/4 are only 6". It can be hard to find the right wheelbase though... many are cab & chassis (135" or 159") or crewcab (165"). Only the reg. cab longbox is 131".

1-tons have a 2" narrower spring spacing on the rear axle, and inboard shocks.

The possible donor truck I'm getting for bignissan is a reg cab short box, I believe. It's an 83 C30.

A shortbox frame has a 117" wheelbase - never offered in a 1-ton. :(

Of course... guys cut down frames all the time, so anything's possible. ;)

1-ton is 40" (or 40.5") and the 1/2 or 3/4 is 42" (or 42.5"). The 1/2" difference depends on who you talk to, and how you read the tape measure.
