: What do you all carry for trail spares?
LCexplorer 11-17-2001, 01:57 AM I was cleaning (well at least trying :D ) my shop a few weeks ago. Let's just say I have a whole lot of junk! Pretty much all the LC parts were kept as I justified to myself they were trail spares. Well the reality is if they were all trail spares, I would need to tow a trailer then find room for my camping gear and forget the passenger. Well you get the point, what do you bring as trail spares on your respective rigs?
ironpig70 11-17-2001, 05:45 PM my rig is still in the building phase but when i hit the trail i'm going to take the stock parts that i swaped out with me.
starter
alternator
tie rod
box of u joints
spare axle or two
distributor
hoses
duct tape
i'm going to build a box with slide out drawer to fit in the bed. and if i will with a couple of my buddies we'll split some of this stuff. i'm running dana 44 front 12 bolt rear 350 motor, t350, 203 t-case and my buddie and brother run similar rigs.
ToyTech 11-17-2001, 06:47 PM I drive a mini, but a lot of the parts crossover onto Cruisers, at least in theory. Here is my list off of the top of my head:
Left and right side axles w/ Birfields attached
Locking hub
Axle seals (f&r), knuckle wiper kit
One inner/outer wheel bearing and seal
Spindle
Tie rod/tie rod ends
Rear driveline
U-Joints
Motor mounts
Clutch slave cylinder
Fuel filter
Spring center pins
Pinion oil seal
Fan belts/hoses/clamps
Spare braided steel brake line
Starter
Alternator brushes and voltage regulator
Coil/Igniter
Complete oil change
Gear oil/brake fluid/coolant/brake cleaner/carb cleaner
Various nuts, bolts and misc. hardware and stuff
That's about all that I can think of now :D
woody 11-17-2001, 06:54 PM I've got "on the trail" spare stuff plus "on the trailer" spare stuff...
Trail:
u-joints
2 fine birfs
rear driveshaft
one lockout
inner axle seals
complete set of wheel bearings and seals
front brake pads
rod ends
clutch slave
slave rebuild kit
fuel filters
spring pins
belts, hoses, brake lines, etc.
grease, oil, filters, etc.
Trailer:
spring bushings
shock bushings
starter
water pump
fuel pump
complete center section
spare EZ-lock
spare transfer case
inner front shafts
rear shafts
bolts/hardware
tie rod and drag link
I'm sure there's more, but that's all that comes to mind. Where we wheel, camp is usually within 30 mins, so it's worth it to keep the trail truck light and the trailer loaded.
Live Wire 11-17-2001, 10:12 PM I carry a spare 3rd member,both front axleshafts with birfields,both rear axles, steering arms,tierod & spare ends,hub,spindle,driveshaft flange,driveshaft,starter,distributor & whats inside it, cap,rotor,wires,plugs,alternator,fuel pump,mech.&elec.,spring centering pins,u-bolts,shackle,steering spud shaft,motor mounts,belts,hoses,nuts,bolts,etc,oil,gear-oil,ATF,coolant,water,thermostat,thermostat housing,stop-leak,rad.cap,grease,carb cleaner,hand cleaner,oil filter,fuel-filters,ARB hose & fittings,fuel lines,oilcooler hose,drainplugs for everything,etc,etc. The list goes on............
cruiserbrett 11-18-2001, 01:07 AM I second Woody on the clutch slave cyl kit!!! That has ruined one too many outings, I carry two now...
Also, I carry an electric fuel pump so anyone can use it... (carbed obviously)
The rebuild/seal kits for the L/C disc calipers is a couple of bucks and is worth carrying I think... Any Pepboys will have it...
I carry a spring shackle for the front and rear incase they are victimized by a rock badly.
Two of the longer brake lines are handy incase they get torn somehow...
I need new rear springs because I carry waaaaaay to much
sh*******t.
Everybody always has a smart ass remark about everything I
take but they quite down fast when they need something as
simple as a hose clamp from me.
I was thinking of just towing a whole cruiser behind me when I wheel

      :D
Richard Nelson 11-18-2001, 12:14 PM Personally, I bring Lord Baskerville as a trail spare. I am not quite sure what his trail spare kit is, but he ALWAYS has the parts that we break on the trail.
For the first time, however, he actually has so much stuff in the back of his rig during our last trip to Attica that his suspension compressed to the point that it was hitting one of his tires. We had to offload some stuff onto my truck...

fc187 11-18-2001, 12:42 PM I pulled the back seat out of my 55 and built a box in its place. used turn buckles and I bolts to sinch it down.
Hinged, secure, locks and the weight is centered in the veh.
Allot less effect on the susp than when I had it all tied down in the back. :)
BJ On Roids 11-18-2001, 07:40 PM WOW, i take, like 20 litres of fuel
yeah and along with some clothes that is normally it! when i break something i just go home :(
wngrog 11-19-2001, 12:35 PM It depends on how far from my tow rig I plan on being. If I am within 2 hours, I will carry very little, but if I am going to be way far away, I will load it down with spares.
Remember, weight breaks. You put too much shit in your Cruiser and you are raising the risk of having to use all the shit you are carrying.
Hell, a third member is HEAVY!!
gunracer1 11-19-2001, 12:58 PM most of the time i am not more than 1 hr. from my trailer and i make sure i have other rigs with me, so i go real light. no u joints,or drive shafts. i just carry a good set of hand tools and a bunch of zip ties and don't forget a come a long[used that to hold the motor in place after i tore out both mounts in pritchett canyon]. i see alot of rigs on the trail that were just not kept up with and failed. i try to make sure my rig is in good shape before we head out. i do carry spare axles, drive shafts, and more tools in the trailer. but i will have a onboard welded before i hit moab again. and i all ways have a big cooler. mike
Ahhhhh
The most important item
The cooler
It is no fun cracking knuckles without beverages

As long as I run cruiser axles I will allways carry an extra 3rd.:D
it has saved ous asses 3 times this year. Saved morgan once ;)
when our club goes wheeling (all cruisers) at least one of us carrys a third, one guy carrys birfs, and so on....
I drive the 55 so I usually end up being the parts truck, and not having the luxury of a tow rig, I usually have at least 100 miles of highway also. :fj:

What he said ! I also carry a welder and a source of compressed air capapable of using some air tools.
wngrog 11-19-2001, 07:50 PM Ah the joys of wheeling 20+ year old rigs.....
fc187 11-19-2001, 10:23 PM and we wouldnt have it any other way :D
So, how do you strap all that stuff down. One of our club members rolled his 60 over the weekend. Hard to imagine how you could strap down a box in a 40 that would withstand that. A third member vs. my head....ouch.
coyote 11-21-2001, 05:32 PM I bought a diamond plate box from DeeZee that fits snug in the back and bolted it through the side fender walls. It will withstand any rollover unless the body goes free and takes the cage...but then again if I go that hard, I'll be dead! Checkout the stuff they have its very secure, pretty, and very expensive but is a solution...like 39"wide by 36" deep by 12 " high....htp://www.deezee.com
dog walker 11-22-2001, 07:22 PM Jesus Christ!! I'd break down all the time if I carried that much crap in weight!
I carry fluids, silicone, one U-joint, one rod end, some nuts and bolts (very few), an onboard welder, spark plug, rags, tools, clutch cyl rebuild kit, and maybe a few other itmes.
Jeff
DCruiser138 11-22-2001, 08:08 PM what did you carry when your cruiser was stockish though jeff? like, when you had cruiser 3rds, and axles. i need to start getting the shit like that.....so what is NEEDED?

Hell, I carry twice that in beer alone
If weight is a problem you just drink it :D :D :D
I carry a lot of tools and spares but I bet it don't amount to more than 60 or 70 lbs.
Carrying an extra 60 or 70 lbs sure beats the hell out of walking for parts, or leaving your rig out in the middle of no-where for who knows how long.
Wasn't it a couple of years ago someone left their jeep on Cadillac hill for a week and came back and found it brutally vandilized ?
I like to think that no matter where I am I'll be capable of fixing my rig and driving it home. It's also nice to have a part for someone who may be in need.
What goes around, comes around.
dog walker 11-23-2001, 07:09 PM LOL!!! Hey Dustin, when I had Landcruiser running gear I carried prety much everything thats mentioned above!! I only carried big stuff like third member and axle shafts if I was far away like Moab or the Hammers though. Try somthing like this:
spare double arm
tie rod end
spare passenger side knuckle
2 knuckle bearings
1 wheel bearing
1 birfield
1 complete driveshaft (front) (it's the longest)
two shackles (stock-two peice)
2 shackle bolts and a couple of bushings
1 locking hub
1 spindle
some misc front end bolts
and of course some fluids and motor parts such as ignition parts, and a fuel pump.
Jeff

Ditto that!!! Same list here, minus the clutch cyl (auto)...and most ofthe time I'm using that stuff for others...I see guys breaking on the easy lines/ trails and think "what the..."--Must be the 800lbs of "what if weight"
fc187 11-23-2001, 10:01 PM I dont think the items I listed are all too much. I would rather not weigh my rig down, but if it helps me and my friends get home, its all good. Like In said, none of us trailer our rigs, and we have at least 100 miles of driving after we get to the trail head.
the third,... I have had to use my spare 3rd for three trail repairs this year (not on my rig). Two of the three repairs where on unloaded fj40's. and one loaded fj55. The only thing my fully loaded fj55 has snaped this year was a motor mount.
Im not going to argue that exccesive weight leads to exccesive stress on the veh. But, being unprepared can fuck a weekend up fast. each times those thirds snaped we would have had to either drive a long way to get another or swap the front to rear and spin our way out in 2wd. An hour later we where back on the trail and enjoying our weekend.
my stock of scrap metal I bring has also saved more than one unfotunate wheeler. A couple main leafs dont weigh that much. other than that, I dont think its that much more than Jeffs list.
Like I said, Its all in a locking, framed crate thats fastened to the tub with eye bolts and turnbuckles.
My 55 is damn near 6,000lbs, I doubt 200 more lbs is going to hurt any thing. hell you average buddy is at leats 200lbs. I just roll solo and call it even :D
Jettech 11-24-2001, 11:37 AM couple U-Joints:flipoff2:
