: Steering box seal replacement

OK, In pursuit of oil spill prevention... I got the pitman arm off the box I got from Mike, but the pinion shaft seal looks as though it may have gotten chewed up when Mike removed it from his Rangie. I'm pursuing the seal from an industrial supply source as the Rover shops seem to want to sell me an $80.00 seal kit and I only need the one, and also the seal mfgr. was kind enough to stamp the dimensions on the seal!

Has anybody here replaced a steering gear box pinion shaft seal? I thought someone had commented the Timm might have an improved means of sealing this or the sector shaft (which doesn't appear to have leaked). It looks as though I should be able to just pry the old one out and drive the new one in, but wondered if anybody had gone before me.

I may just install it and see what happens, it can't leak any worse than the one I have now (with sorbents beneath it in the parking lot).

Thanx,
Paul

Timm rebuilt my box and used a double lipped seal in place of the factory one, for the out put seal (sector shaft). For the input seal the box was actually machined to accept a bettery quality, more common seal. Unfortunately, I don't have part #'s.

Edit: not that rebuilding my box curred my leaking problem. The resevoir then started leaking. Just got that fixed. I think Im done, but I need to clean up the rest of the residue to make sure.

Paul,

Sorry that I buggered it all up for you. Did it happen when I was trying unsucessfully to remove the drop arm?

I was trying my best not to destroy anything, and the box came right off of the steering linkage, so I don't think that's when I did it.

Maybe the dozen or so whacks with the BFH messed it up.

Gotta go.

Mike:
The one one the drop arm is just a mud/dust seal. Thee one I'm worried about is the pinion seal and it does seem a little boogered up. Ii may be being overly cautious, but I don't want to have to pull it apart after I had the opportunity to fix it but was too cheap to do it right.

D'you get the check yet? I figure I'll hear about it when you do:flipoff2:

You'll know what I mean when you get it-a little present from John, Ho, and Kyyle.

Peace,
Paul

Got a new seal from NAPA, now to see if I can remove the old one and drive in the new one...

Spent all day yesterday pulling a tranny from a Disco and have to finish it before I can start on my own...

Just like cobbler's kids and their shoes.

Peace,
Paul

I'm not yet sure if it will work and am afraid of misleading anyone until I have a chance to confirm. Upon confirmation, I'll post it.

Okie dokie. Hey, how far are you from Badlands?

It's NAPA P/N CR 8550 presumably, it is a ChicagoRawhide seal. Someday, I might actually be able to see if this seal fits correctly!

I'm in Fort Wayne, about three hours from the Badlands. I've only been there once. Free wheeling is only a few more hours away in Kentucky or two-three times as far in Michigan. Might have enjoyed myself more if I'd known where the trails went, etc. At least I didn't break anything or roll my truck.

Peace,
Paul
