COLLEGE PARK -- A man and a woman were in grave condition today after the man shot the woman in a garage at the University of Maryland, College Park, then turned the gun on himself, police said.
It was not immediately clear if the injured were students. The shootings occurred in a garage near the Comcast Center basketball arena. Campus police said the garage is reserved for use during the day by commuter students.

The man used his car to block the woman's car in a parking space, police said.

"There may have been some sort of conversation between the two before the shooting," said Capt. Andy Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department.

The woman was shot shortly before 12:45 p.m. as she sat in her car.

"The male shot the female and turned the gun on himself," Ellis said. "It does not appear to be an act of random violence."

One person was taken away in an ambulance, while a Maryland State Police helicopter flew the other patient to a hospital. Ellis said the man and woman were in "grave condition," defining that status as "worse than critical."

Police found a handgun in the garage, which was partially roped off for about three hours as investigators surrounded a car on the third level, taking photographs. The car did not appear to be parked in a parking space.

About 3:30 p.m., tow trucks brought two cars out of the garage. One, a white Honda Civic, had blood on the driver's seat and the door frame on the driver's side. The window on that side appeared to have been lowered.

The garage is on the edge of campus, just off Route 193, near the 17,100-seat Comcast Center.

Mark Scott, a university employee, said he was working in a maintenance building across from the garage when he heard two shots sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 12:45 p.m.

Scott said he heard "one shot and a second or so later, I heard another one."

University sophomore Xiomara Larios, 19, said she was trying to drive onto the third level of the garage when two people stopped her and told her there were two people lying on the deck ahead.

Larios said she did not see or hear anything.

"It just happened so fast. I still can't believe two people got shot," Larios said.

Police told students who had vehicles parked on the third level that they would not be able to drive out of the garage for several hours.

Ivan Borissow, an 18-year-old freshman, said police told him he would need to wait two hours to get his car.

"It's scary knowing something like that happens so close, in broad daylight, especially since it was so close to where my car was parked," he said.

Jimmy Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore pulling out of the garage, said "It's crazy. You would never expect anything like that at College Park."

And you didn't like it when I commented I'd known a guy in Balto who'd been kidnapped and killed...

Scary the stuff that happens around there when you're not supposed to be packin' heat (not that I ever did when I lived there-yeah, right).

Sorry to hear it hit so close to home. I've been unfortunate enough to know a number of folks who have been murdered. The last one was trying to help a gang-banger who'd been shot in front of his house when he got shot and killed himself.

Peace,
Paul

Definately a sad state of affairs.....

BUT - I have to say, I sure as hell hope your not a Journalism Major - because your subject infers a murder/suicide - which means DEAD. These two are merely in "grave" condition - which means you need to get your facts straight! ;)

Terrible what happened, but it didn't happen in Baltimore. College Park is closer to DC.

That being cleared up, I moved from Baltimore years ago, and now live about 30 miles north of there. That city sucks all around, once you get past the tourist traps.

DC is just as bad. The asshole is dead, and it doesn't look to good for her.
