: Trans rebuild ?
MKBruin 08-31-2001, 10:29 AM ok, I might be buying a sm465...well 2 actually. one is a 4wd with a countershaft bearing that's going out and the other is a good condition 2wd trans. A local shop quoted me about $300 to redo all the bearings...is this something I can do myself or should I let the pro's handle it?
oldjeep 08-31-2001, 10:33 AM I've rebuilt a couple T18's and it's not real tough, but you need some basic tools like a bearing puller and a press to put them back on. A complete rebuild set of bearings and thrust washers runs about $150. Check www.novak-adapt.com (http://www.novak-adapt.com) for the kits.
Kit #SP465 $158.
SM465 Small Parts Kit consists of: all seals, bearings, bushings, snap rings, keys, spacers, thrust washers, oil baffle, retaining pin, seals, gaskets and instructions
What confuses me is you say the countershaft bearing is going out? Every tranny I've ever seen has a few dozen loose roller bearings for the countershaft/cluster gear.

MKBruin 08-31-2001, 10:46 AM well, that's what the man says, and when I called AAmco transmissions for a little info and pricing and he told me that the countershaft bearing is a common problem with the 465 tranny.....I've never been in one YET so personally I have no idea, I was hoping once again that ya'al could help me here.

Im amazed that AAmco KNEW what a 465 was, they didnt have a clue what a 420 was

There's a diagram of a sm465 there, you need acrobat viewer to view it. Strange design, the cluster gear is multipart and it does indeed have a bearing on each end of the cluster, rather than a countershaft and needles.
but honestly, if you've been sitting around waiting for an answer rather than just tearing into it, maybe you're better off letting a shop rebuild it.
MKBruin 09-06-2001, 04:28 PM hey, I don't even have the tranny yet. I am trying to figure out if I'm going to buy it or not. AAmco wants $440 to do a full bearing rebuild, I can get the kit for $150, but if I mess it up it's about $300 down the drain, I am jsut doing my research first.
next time just answer and save the wise ass remarks.

What fun would that be?
Considering SM465's run about $50 at the pick and pull, what's it matter? Besides, unless somebody actually took it apart they are just guessing at where the noise is coming from.

Well since we all know you so well of course the answer to that is...
Chuck DID answer your question but it wasn't the answer you're looking for. You've answered it yourself, you're intimidated by the task so pay the $$ and have a shop do it for you.
1BDYJ 09-06-2001, 05:29 PM If your uncomfortable tearin into it...than dont. Let someone who knows how to..ummmm....maybe HELP you learn how!!
Eric Ruhl 09-06-2001, 05:33 PM Hey, I'm not too far from ya. Grab the trannies and the rebuild kit and cruise down to my place. We'll figure it out
