Should I seal the oil pan with a felpro gasket or use RTV? What seals better? Thanks

I got the gasket from the dealer, part #53007568 and the jobber price is $29. It is a one piece rubber/metal for the 4.0, but works with the 258 as well. It's worth the money. Good luck.

I'll second the one piece gasket. I got mine from NAPA for about
$30. Hasn't leaked a drop. :D

RTV does not work well on thin sheet metal applications like oil pans and valve covers. I used the one piece gasket also, with a small dab of black RTV in the corners of the bearing caps and block surface.

Third ... unless you are extremely talented or lucky, the two piece will leak relatively shortly. The one piece rocks.
As for rtv ... nyet

I used the 1piece gasket too. I got it from 4wd hardware, only cause I had ordered some other stuff at the same time. I use copper gasket seal for most gasket applications. It comes in an aerosol can and I have had the same can for 4 motors and the can is still 1/2 full. Plus the can does not get smashed and squirt all over the tool drawer. Also, it is real easy to clean up if your motor is high maintenance(like mine). Last and not least, it does not leak at all.

Well guys, I changed the rear main and the oil pan gasket last night. The rear main really wasn't much of a problem. Pretty much was able to punch it right out and then pull it out. I used the one piece rubber/metal gasket and I like it much better than that cork felpro gasket. Got everything back together and it's not leaking a drop. It was leaking like a faucet of water before, adding a quart of oil every couple of days. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about that crap anymore :D :rasta:
