I'm finishing up my anti-wrap bar and looking at different ways to mount the crossmember on my YJ. What do you think about welding a 2X2 to the back of the skid plate? Reinforce the skidplate and provide the perfect mounting point for the bar.

I bent up a 1" (I think) bar to fit into the groove on the rear of the crossmember. Then I stich welded it on and made my shackle mount attach to this. Works good.

Rather than weld to the skid (which is sketchy and not very stable), why not run the 2-by-2 from frame rail to frame rail?

Mine is welded to the skid plate - which is reinforced. Works fine.

I was checking out Sam's Offroad and he now sells a crossmember that goes from frame rail to frame rail

It looks like simple 2x4 tubing with some angle iron welded on the ends. but get this he wants $175 for it. it must be that cute yellow paint. you could build this for about $60 including the 1 day rental of the welder.

Yup, I built one like the Sam's bar out of 2" square tube with angle on both ends. I welded the angle to the frame just above the transfer case side ujoint. I think the metal cost me about $10, and I already have the welder. Mines black though.

Well here's what I did. Welded 2" x 2" x 1/4" wall tube to the back of the skid plate, then welded 3/16" plate to the bottom of the skid and the tube so the rocks I slide over won't rip the tube off the back. I'd post pics but I'm sure my welds would get flamed. I'm still learning. Still can't weld upside down. Here's hoping the welds on the axle tubes hold

I went with a 2x2 x 1/4" bar, and mounted it at the furthest rearward skid plate mounting bolt. My skid plate is all custom fabricated with 1/4" steel, but I still dont like the idea of using the skid plate alone as a mounting point. This set up, works great.
