Any of you guys/gals who fish...

What kind of lube do you use on yer reels if any?
And is it for Fresh or salt water? Casting/spinning/fly?

Also, how often do you RE-spool your reel?

I'll accept any other misc. maintenance tips as well.
:D

i used to respool my shimano spinning reel about once every 4-6 weeks. i used to fish daily though... just check the line to see how its holding up, make sure the equipment seems to be workin right, and you can use any quality lube for the bearings.. i used white lithium.:D oh, freshwater, for largemouth bass;)

I RE-spool the reel twice every season. And as for the lube that I use is the same stuff that I got for my Abu-Garcy level winding reel.

I'd like ot know this too. I used to hardly ever clean my reel when I lived in Houston doing freshwater fishing.

I moved here to corpus (5 miles from the beach) and both my reels won't spin anymore, locked up from rust.

Brand names/places to buy? I haven't found a decent tackle shop here... Dick's Sporting Goods is okay, but what am I asking for??

My Shimano spinning reel (wife bought me for xmas 2 yrs. ago) is the best working reel i've ever used. I just wanna make sure it STAYS good. ;)

Sorry for the geeky newbie questions. :flipoff2:

Up until now, I've just rinsed off the gear w/ fresh water after fishing salt. I've heard that proper lube can help the reels last a LOT longer.

On my Abu baitcaster, re-spool once a year, hardly used excepted when fishing on the coast. I use reel lube or gun-oil and rinse it after every use.
On my Orvis fly reel (used about 4 times a week) I have 2 spools that get re-spooled once a year. Fly line is too expensive to change it much more often, but the line is cleaned every other week. I use some vasaline on the gears to keep them lubed and wash it only when it gets dirt on it.

Heck, you're supposed to LUBE them things?

I respool when I start losing fish because the line breaks. I haven't done it in a few YEARS, and I run four or six pound Trilene. Probably landed 40 or 50 trout in that time.

I only fish salt water. Rinse after EVERY use. I then soak the reels in warm water...helps disolve the salt. Allow to dry then lube them up. On surf casting reels (not spinners), be carefull what lube you use. Different reels will respond differently to different oils in various temperatures. A thin grease on a hot f'n day, well, have fun with the birdnests. :D

Depending on the fishing, sometimes I have to respool daily, at least on my lighter tackle. You tug on a 150 pound tarpon, 50 pound red drum, 40 pound striper, 60 pound cobia, 40 pound king mackeral, etc more than a few times on the light stuff and you're asking for trouble.

On the big offshore stuff for tuna, wahoo, marlin, etc, you're line will often last longer. But we're talking 130 pound test line here too...and wire leaders are taking the bulk of the abuse.
