View Full Version : ProRock Sportsmanship

I just got back from the ProRock event in Cedar City and I have to comment on the sportsmanship of the competitors. We were in a battle for 1st place with Tracy Jordan when Tiny got bound up and broke a Detroit Locker. This put us out of contention for 1st place but second place was still up for grabs. We got Tiny off the course and assessed the damage. Jon Nelson, the car owner, told us to go do our job and study the last course while he worked on Tiny. When there was a lull in the action on the course, Jon and I walked back to check on how things were progressing with Tiny. We were amazed to find Jason Paule, Joshum, Mitch Guthrie and Dustin Webster frantically working to get a new 3rd member put back into Tiny. All of these competitors had something to gain by us not finishing the competition but yet went out of their way to get us back into action. The third member was replaced in 23 minutes. Team Little and Little graciously allowed us to drop back in line which allowed us to complete the last course without any penalty points. I also want to thank my fellow club members from the Inland Empire 4 Wheelers who are always there for support and played a major roll in repairing Tiny.
Although the competition is sometimes intense, the underlying camaraderie is what keeps me coming back.
Man I love this sport!

That was awsome.
Very similar to day 2 at RCAA Moonrocks when Chris Durham broke an axle shaft. The announcer sent out a page to Jason Paule to please report to his trailer, Chris Durham needed his assistance. Jason returned (along with a couple of other competitors) and helped replace the shaft during the 45 minute allowed repair time. Very cool to see the comraderie.
I had a chance to meet most of the competitors that back at the hotel and must say that every single person was cooler than hell. Not a single ego there. Great group to hang with.

That is way cool to hear about...
and I can't tell you how often the competitors are thanking us for judging the events...it makes it worth while to just get one thank you let alone form almost every competitor!!! I have a blast doing it and will continue to judge as long as my scheduling allows me to do so...BTW I judge UROC not ProRock just so there isn;t any confusion...For the most part all the competitors are stand up top notch guys...;)

I forgot to mention...On top of all the repairs that were going on...Julio (Mitch's spotter), Tracy and Don Robbins walked the last course with me since we weren't able to study the course as long as we would have liked to.
It just gets better.

That's what separates this sport from the rest. I believe it started on the trail and is carrying over to competition. When I was in Baja Rocks and riding around 2nd, after the first day. The next morning I noticed I had a main frame rail broken in half. Charlie Copsey gave me his Power welder, and before it came out of the case, Jason Paule was welding my junk back together. No body wants to win by default! Hopefully when all the $$$ finally gets into this sport and all the new competitors come over from desert, mud ect, that the ego's won't take over. RUNDOG

Well you guys deserve it Larry!
I remember in St. George John Nelson us (Ron & Brad) borrow a coilover. Thats cool stuff man. It kept us running in the second day of the competition. It takes a lot of effort to get a rig out to a competition and it would have really sucked to be out after 3 courses.
Ah, what an example we are all setting for the children.....

That is awesome. I have been to many other types of motorsports, and there are a lot of people like that. I love hearing stories about Jason like that. He is my age, and doesn't have that normal attitude that young adults do these days.
There was a time when my uncle broke his wheel on his open road race car. We got the tires mounted on the other wheels, and got them put on. When he went to pull out, we found out that we forgot to put the spacers in. He was freaking out because he was strapped in and the parade lap was almost over. Any competitor that was around came over and helped. I have never changed two tires that fast before.
I hope that the sport stays that way, and doesn't end up like the others.
Great story.

That's how it's always been for me in mud racing. I can't remember all the times I've had my direct competition on, under, or behind (push-starting) my rig to make sure I got a run :)

Doing a search for something totally unrelated and came across this old thread.
Given all the tension and BS lately, I thought I'd bring it back. This is why we do what we do!

Thanks for reminding me Rockteeth. Jon and I were pretty disgusted after the rcca finals and even contemplated walking away from competitive rock crawling and just go wheeling. The fun was gone and we were just burnt out. Nelson said it was just the end of season blues and it wouldn't be long and we'd chomping at the bit again. He's right.

No problem, been there before....even got the free tshirt.
Can't make money off comps, so we better have a good time for all the money spent!!
