truck looks great....

What I am doing is take the 20 gallon fuel tank out of jeep cherokee..mounting it where the stock spare used to be...trim the bed down to about 5 feet,,,,,and now i got 38 gallons of fuel load.....should work perefectly... the jeep tank fits almost perfectly between the frame rails.....give it a go....

Fuel cell...like the one under my bed? Of course its custom w/ all the smog crap still on it. I had the same problem when I went to the shorter 85 xcab frame--no place for a gas tank.

the shorter wheelbase is a must do. Well worth the pain.

So is it smoged as a 98 or an 85? Last i checked there was nothing i could do. Modifaction of the fuel system was/is against the smog law.

It's reg'd as a 98 Tacoma w/ a salvaged title. I talked to a smog ref and he just wanted the smog equipment on there. really didnt care that the tank wasnt the same. just cut apart the stock tank and welded the flanges onto my custom cell.
Of course I dont have to smog my truck ever again where I live, so that helps too.

Don't have any way to post pics, so if someone can put them up i'll e-mail them to ya. Thanks I've seen, and even chatted with most of the SAS Tacoma owners on the TTORA board.
I've got a 98 Taco. It actually started it's live out as a 2wd Pre-Runner. I have since gone SAS with a pass side D44 out of a 78 Waggy. I also converted it to 4wd using an 82 Toy case bolted to an OTT Industries divorced t-case adapter. All custom driveline had to be made up as well.Shakerbuilt steering, soon to be hydro assist. Truck rolls on 38" TSL Radials, and is in the process of being re-geared to 5.29/5.38's along with my Lockright.

BTW all the SAS Tacomas are lookin sweet!!!

Sounds nice, That is alot of Fuel :eek:but that dosent solve the "need fuel cell to shorten truck problem" as i am not willing to mount the stock tank in the bed.

is the tank in a taco the same is the 89-95 trucks?
my truck was 124inches,I took 9 inches out of the front of the box slid the rear axle forward 10 inches, and slid the tank forward 4.5 inches.just fits with a 1 inch body lift.also your rear shocks can not be mounted to the front of the rear end as the tank is now tht much closer to the axle and the shocks wouldn't clear.
I'm now at 114 and it makes a big difference

I had an idea... I noticed that there seems to be alot of intrest in this thred so far.... how do you guys feel about showing some detailed pics and sharing some tech.

I know that Tacomas arent "Rocket Science" but there are alot of thangs that are different from first and second generation toyota trucks.

I am aware that alot of this info is already out there on TTORA and web sites like Franken Tacos (thanks buy the way), but I have a feeling that there are alot of fellow wheelers that havent seen some of the tech involved.

Maybe this thred could become a good visual guide and offer some good tech. on the taco SAS

Well, Tacoma axle swaps aren't much different than other axle swaps. First difference, Tacomas have the t-case output on the driver's side. Since most of us have chosen dana 44 axles, it's easy to find stuff with a driver's side diff.

The '80 - '88 Wagoneer has a front axle about the same width as the Tacoma rear and the diff is on the driver's side. Only problem is that the spring pads are 31.5" center to center, where the earlier Toy spring pads are 29" Not a really big deal until you want to run big tires (37+), then you run into problems rubbing the springs.

The Tacoma frame also makes it a bit tricky to fab up the front shackle hangers. Most of us have chosen to stick the hanger just below the frame instead of through the frame. Since the frame is pretty wide at that point, the hanger kinda hangs off the inside edge. Early attempts proved that the stress from the leaf spring will rip the hangers right off the frame if not properly braced.

Here's mah truck. ARBs front and rear. Still too cheap for a round front driveshaft though. And I wax it twice a year.

Front springs have the top two leaves from a stock waggy 7 leaf pack and the bottom 4 leaves are from an allpro 5" pack (I bent the top AP ones).

Rear springs are chevys with a ~10" shackle. No block.

Those are 35s.

A lot of bentup.com stuff on there.

You say power but a lot of us I guess are spoiled. If you ask most of us we will tell you are trucks are gutless.

Robert Cannon has a s/c tho, he also has all the fuel mods and everything else in the world under his hooD!! He runs some crazy low gears in his crawlers. I think it's a klune and atlas 2. I don't think he has had many problems.

If you plan to get the charger, get it thru one of TTORA sponsors we get it for 1800.00 I think and the dealer wants 4000 usally. And anyone can put one on.

Most of us our happy with our trucks it's nice to have a clean interior and a decent wheeler on the outside! Don't wait too long tho the new Taco's will be wider.

Still IFS.

I've always said, "If I want a SFA, I'd buy a SFA truck to build. I won't SAS my Tacoma"

but,

I found an axle and am seriously thinkin' bout SASin' it after I move in 9 months.

Just not sure if I wanna SAS the Tacoma or the 93. I really wanna SAS the 93 but right now it's the wifes rig. As soon as she spurts out that kid, it'll be mine and she'll get a 4runner or somthing simular to haul 2 kids. (Might keep our Honda) Either way, I'm gonna SAS one of em. Funny how perspectives can change.

SAS is contagious as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just realized, it's SARS without the R.
Crap, now I need a smiley with a N95 mask!

I have wheeled with tacoma owners and older rigs like jeeps and toyotas.

The tacoma guys seem to care more about getting someone threw stuff with out laying it on it's side or sliding into rocks. But it still happens everytime I go to Az I come back with a fresh dent. But that's part of the fun.

You want to see a dented taco talk to Frankentaco I don't think he has a straight panel left!

I have an opinion on body damage....

My truck is dual purpose, I wheel it often, and also use it to get to work every day. I also like to keep it looking decent.

Now don't get me wrong, I like the challenging trails. And if I smash a fender or a door, or roll my truck, I will fix it. Some guys enjoy taking extreme lines on obstacles, and don't care when they flop it. That's cool, but it's not what I like to do with my rig.

I've run the Rubicon a couple times with my Tacoma, and some crazy trails from hell in Arizona. Rock sliders and careful driving go a long way in preventing body damage!

Anyway, here are some Tacoma sheet metal carnage pics from some trail runs in the last year or two.

Also i think the reason why most tacomas have less dents right now, is because most of them have only been hardcoretrail ready the last few years...we haven't had as much time as to dent our trucks like the older guys....but we're working on it:D

All ya gota do is get out you torch and cut away. When the flames go out get in and duct-tape in some plastic wrap. :flipoff2:

Seriously......... get a kit, they will include a templet that you use to cut the roof. You have to remove the headliner to make shure you arent cutting any roof suports.

You can get all sizes and even automated ones.

edit: Wont a sunroof look alittle funny on the truggy:D

I find it funny you should mention that. I went wheelin' alone and met 2 repeeJ dudes this past weekend. Since I was alone, I tagged along. On one rocky hill climb I was actually taking the harder line cause the easier line (one they did) risked body damage. Of course we all made it no prob. On the other side they raz'd me, (yah, the same 2 srepeeJ that chose the easy lines) for caring about dents. After a short silence, I just looked at em with a shitty smirk and said...I just care more about my rig. It's a Tacoma thing. You wouldn't understand.

You should of heard em hollar. They cracked up laughing. One even mentioned he couldn't believe I usd that saying against em.

Good ole boys. (for srepeeJ)

When it comes down to it, the Tacoma is one of the pertiest (lines and curves) looking trucks on the trail.

The fact remains that there are trails you will never run. If you are happy running trails that the hardcore guys dismiss as too easy to bother with, more power to you.

Psst!

it's not the trails you run that make you a wheeler. It's about pushing your machine to it's limits no matter what stage of "built" it's in.

I've seen guys wheel harder on 32's than alot of guys on 38.5's or bigger.

If you wanna think running hardcore trails makes you a wheeler, more power to you. Just fawkin' wid ya but that's kinda like the more lift and bigger tires equals a better more capable rig attitude. Oh well, to each his own. Happy Wheelin'

I make Taco owners look like pansys eh? Well, if the description is fitting for you...then...by all means, be a pansy.:flipoff2:

I guess I'm a pansy for taking the hard line, in my DD, and avoiding unnessasary body damage. What a crok you spit. That's the finesse part of wheelin' my friend. It doesn't take any finesse to bounce your rig off stuff to get through an obstacle. Where's the skill factor is just slammin' your way through??

I've got plenty of scratches and my fair share of dents. I'd don't care about the scratches, it's only paint. I do try to avoid body damage (dents) but that's not always an option on the trail. When rubbin' a tree or rock is eminant, I try to keep it to a minimum. If that makes me a pansy, I guess I'm a pansy.

You might understand once you have a kid or 2. Geez, married with no kids and talkin' smack about how others treat their DD wheelin' rig. I could somewhat see your point if it was a trailer slut but it's my DD and I'm not particularly fond of drivin' a beat up lookin' rig on a daily basis. You oviously are.

Sorry to interrupt the flaming, but are you gonna be at MCR3 this weekend? I'll be there sometime Saturday morning to check out all the sick rigs!

I checked out your truck a couple years back, but that was before I got involved in a few Tacoma axle swaps. I would like to crawl under your rig and check out what you ended up with for spring hanger and shackle hangers. The last time I saw your rig was on Mormon Immigrant trail, and it was buried in the snow. :)

technically not a taco, but had same taco front end (carved for SAS). There is only one other SASed 3rd gen 4Runner that I know of, and that was Greg's '96. Any others? I haven't posted enough to post pics yet, but you can see mine on my site below.

There's quite a few 3rd gen 4runners with solid axles these days...

damn, i just love that bumper, i'm definately gonna build something very similar.

so are all of the leaf sprung taco guy runing the shackle under the frame? originaly i build my s10 with the shackles under the frame cause the frame is really wide there, but i think i'm gonna try to build some super wide dogleg shackles to try to get around it, in fact, i'm gonna right now, if polyperformance is open on a saturday.

what i find funny is that 3/4 of those rigs don't have any significant body damage. Not saying you don't wheel or arn't hardcore. I just find it funny that SAS tacomas have less body dammage than me. I really need to learn to be more careful with the 31's :flipoff2:
