: Stub Axle info
FrankenRover 04-30-2003, 10:39 AM Hey guys,
Does anyone know if any of the stub axles (that will fit a late model coiler housing) from any of the LR models are made without that deep key cut (or at least a shallow version) on the outer threads? I know why it is there, but it limits the amount you can overbore the inner diameter of the stubs.
Thanks,
Billster
redrangie 04-30-2003, 10:42 AM Are you referring to the 1" divot or the .25" divot? I know the later abs modules use the latter, but it is still a notch.
j
FrankenRover 04-30-2003, 10:44 AM How deep does the .25" divot go?

FrankenRover 04-30-2003, 10:49 AM Here is what I have now (assuming it is the 1" divot).

redrangie 04-30-2003, 11:15 AM I'll have to wait until I get home.

John,
Nice closing quote there. That poor guy!
green rover 04-30-2003, 02:22 PM they all have some short of cut in them on the coiler axles. how big do you want the bore to be? i do not remeber the dia but i looked in this before and i think the largest axle shaft you will be able to get in it is the ford nine inch 31 spline. but the third member was to big to put into the housing
thats why i have toy third members
redrangie 04-30-2003, 06:44 PM They are the same dude.... sorry.
64rovr 04-30-2003, 08:26 PM i know what you are trying to do:D personally i dont think a 35 spline land rover axle is worth the effort/cost
FrankenRover 04-30-2003, 08:39 PM No ya don't man.:flipoff2:

64rovr 04-30-2003, 08:43 PM :flipoff2:
they can be bored out to take a 30 spline shaft easily (and you have done that), but you want it bored out more:D what else could it be aside from 35spl? :D

salisbury shafts are the same spline count/diameter as a regular 24 spline rover shaft, they just dont neck down.
RockRover 04-30-2003, 08:55 PM You might want to look into 35 spline stubs from Jac Mac....Might gettcha' the ID your looking for. Dunno' about the bolt pattern x-ref between the two, but it would be worth looking into.

PS: Why all the secrets dude?

My bad. I was think of something else. aren't 101fc's something like 1.5?
I don't know shiat about those series thingies....
(how's that for humble?)

lol no problem. i dont know what 101fc's are.
i dont know shiat about **insert random noun here**

He's talkin' about the front spindel.
I betcha' he's looking into cramming a 30 spline 60 stub and UJ in the housing (using the larger Series swivel pin housings on the ends). That would be a sweet combo with cromo' axles...Too bad no known manufactures (KC?) has looked at making a 4340, 30 spline, SPL55x UJ axle.

FC's are Dana 60 centers (Salisbury). You can pop a 60 ARB/Detroit in them right off. It's the inners at that point that get costly. Other than that it's a 60 with phlippin' huge CV's.

green rover 05-01-2003, 08:45 AM if you put in larger u joint won't you just move the weak spot to the axle shaft?

Serious One 05-01-2003, 10:32 AM cool you found it! I was looking for it and couldn't remember where I hid it.
BTW those are Coopers hands in case anyone cares. :flipoff2:

Technically yes. But typically it's the yokes that go first (with CTM's and cromo' 297x/Dana 44) 30 spline axles. Look at the typical failure of a 44 axle...90% of the time it's at the yoke.
With a Dana 60, 30 spline axle, the yoke and uj is much larger. Hence a good cromo' axle with a 60 joint will outlive a CTM'd cromo "standard" D44 axle...Much better combo...Still not 1.5" mass'beefo' but very strong none the less.

Puffdragon 05-01-2003, 04:09 PM Hey doug, did you hear Greg G busted his front end in Moab.
60's suck arse:flipoff2:
I am sure he was gettin it like he always does.
mmmmm CV envy. I'll bet I couldn't break those things. I'd never worry about drivetrain again.:D
FrankenRover 05-01-2003, 05:59 PM Here is a few interesting picts.
These big axles are from the D60 and D70 in our new project truck - a 1967 M715 5/4ton truck. They are 30 spline 60 axles in front (not the most desirable, but readily avail.). Spares like these are new in box (but circa 1968 wrapped in waxy kinda paper) for about $175 for a full set (2 fronts with ujoints and all, and 2 rears).
I am kinda interested how they will hold up to big tires and some 4 wheelin.
I threw in a shot with the Ujoints compared with the early 110 CV (AEU 2522). And a MD 30 spline rover axle.

FrankenRover 05-01-2003, 06:01 PM Here is a close up of the CV/ujoint.
Billster
FrankenRover 05-01-2003, 06:01 PM And here is an extra throwout bearing that I also ordered. Not to bad for $5.00. I wonder if there is bean dip in there too!
Billster
FrankenRover 05-01-2003, 06:02 PM BTW - big thanks to KC for finding this truck for me and talking the guy down to $750 (it runs and drives as well).
