Ok, I need help now. I have tried replacing the seal twice now, and it still leaks a little:confused:. I tried cleaning the shaft with an emery cloth and I used grease on the seal before I put it in. It is leaking out of the yoke side of the rear output seal on my JB conversions SYE. I used napa PN 18658 Thanks In advance.
:p

Is it leaking past the seal? or is it leaking past the splines and the yoke nut?

there should either be a rubber gasket between the yoke and the splines on the output shaft, or some Black RTV.

Are you absolutely sure it's leaking from the shaft? I had an elusive leak after installing my SYE and it turned out to be a cut o-ring where the speedo-gear housing seats in the transfer case. The leaking ATF was being blown away from the speedo-gear housing and towards the tailcone and shaft so it was difficult to track down.

Yes, it is seeping past the seal on the shaft side.

I JUST INSTALLED THE SAME KIT (JB) FROM TOM WOOD. MINE IS NOT LEAKING YET BUT I NOTICED THE SEAL IS CUT JUST OUT SIDE OF THE SPRING IN THE SEAL. MAYBE THE HAVE GOTTEN A SET OF BAD SEALS?   I PLAN ON DRIVING MINE TO INDIANA THIS WEEK. GOING TO THE BADLANDS. IT WAS ON THE COVER OF 4WHEEL PARTS MAG. ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO, TROY'S TRAIL.

Put RTV black where the star gasket is and torque it to 150 ft/pounds.

and don't tell me it isn't leaking from there until you try this :)

I will try it, but I have the black star washer in there and I can see it seeping out of the seal touching the yoke here is a pic.

What type of grease should I use? White lithium? General purpose? Vasoline?:rainbow: :flipoff2:

Mine leaked too.

The seal I first replaced it with was the National equivalent. It leaked after a couple days.

I called John at JB (bought the SYE from TW, and had already talked to them) and he sent me out two of the seals that come with the kit, he says they have them special made because National changed the design.

I put one of those in (same style as the one that originally came with the kit), and it hasn't leaked since (months).

I also greased it and RTV'ed the splines right from the beginning.

Good Luck,

Charly

Mine leaked around the outside of the seal:

AFM sent me the National seal. I pulled the tailcone off (this made it easier to get the old seal out) and pulled the seal. Before I put the new seal in, I put a thin coat of RTV around the seal surface in the cone. Installed the seal. Greased the seal surface where the shaft is, and reinstalled the cone. Gooped up the star washer with RTV and reinstalled the yoke. That has been about 300 miles ago, and still no leaks.

As far as what I used to grease the seal with, it's a synthetic grease called "Good Stuff". Brett at AFM turned me onto it, it is super sticky and is an incredible assembly lube because everything holds together. He has it on his website, go to http://www.afm4x4.com then click Catalog then Lubricants.

Scott- I got your PM.

Mine leaked in the same place as yours and I suspected the seal, but someone suggested I put RTV on the inside of the yoke where the star washer is and make sure it was torqued properly. I didn't see how it was going to help,

... But since its such an easy thing to try...

anyway, I tried it cuz it was easier than replacing the seal, so I pulled the yoke, put RTV on the star washer and torqued it back down and ta da. No leaky.

Try it, it can't hurt, and might help.

LOOSE THE CAPS! ITS A DEAD GIVEAWAY THAT YOU ARE A BBS NEWBIE

:flipoff2:

so, you are driving all the way from atlanta to go to the badlands???

tell me you are not.

it would be a shame to drive TWICE the distance to go to Tellico instead. The mags might make it look cool, but its not that great. Sure, there are some crazy obstacles that i would never dream of drving over, my jeep is not that built, and my drving skills aint 'expert' if ya know what I am saying, but these "obstacles" are constructed and are only a short distance. all the trails are easy....

if you are coming from atlanta, go to tellico instead. that's where its at.

Well, I tried the silicone and torque thing but it is still leaking a little, I am still waiting for my seal from John at JB conversions, hopefully that will fix it.
