: Pulling dent out of plastic gas tank
jeepster1220 09-10-2001, 09:37 AM Was washing the Jeep yesterday (I know, that makes me ), and I noticed that my wafer thin factory tank skid was bashed into the left rear corner of my gas tank enough to leave a few gouges and dent the corner in. I was lucky it didn't rip open . Anybody know a way to pop the dent out? I don't think it's hurting anything, but if I can get it out, that would be good. It's right at the corner, so I think it might have to stay that way. And no stupid replies about drilling it, thank you very much Time for a real skid I guess... (Kilby)

jeepster1220 09-10-2001, 09:56 AM You mean like this?
That's a hot water bottle BTW. I saw someone do that once until it exploded. Friggin' crazy !

I think he's doing free shipping now too, but don't hold him to that, I don't work there, I just buy stuff from him and I've been real happy with all of it.
jeepster1220 09-10-2001, 10:00 AM Thanks for the info. I was interested in the Kilby for the same reason as the one you listed, it gives another inch of clearance. The Kilby is $189 unpainted and a little over $200 finished. I was just gonna buy the unpainted one and slap a few good coats of black on it...I'll look into the one you mentioned too
Light a match and drop it in the tank. I'll bet the dent comes out

after further review, I have to agree with Syko, syphon all the gas out and drop in a lit match
Skitzo 09-10-2001, 10:33 AM also, if the dent doesn't come out with just compressed air, take the tank off, let it sit in the sun, then try it - you may also have to use a hammer if you can get one in there.
Dan-H 09-10-2001, 10:48 AM Just don't fawk up the electric pump inside the tank or you will be

I forgot to mention no stupid replies about lighting matches
I think I'm just gonna leave it alone....

The Rockslut 09-10-2001, 11:22 AM I have tried to take a dent out of a CJ 20 gallon plastic tank with compressed air. I sealed the tank and put in about 30-40 psi Sure the tank popped out, but once I released the pressure the plastic still had a memory to it and it some of the way back. If its a small dent I would leave it and get a skid plate or the lift for it.
1BDYJ 09-10-2001, 05:01 PM Make sure you check your vents to see that they are working!! My tank would suck in when empty and expand when full, this led to the rear corner developing a crack and leaking fuel. I patched it twice and it would only hold for a couple of months. Eventually I replaced the tank with new and had found the vent hoses were pinching between top of tank and strap.
BossBuilt 09-10-2001, 11:24 PM Pull it, plug all the holes off and stuff about 30psi of air in it and the dent will pop right out. If the dent wants to pop back just heat the area with a heat gun until it's good and hot (while at 30psi) but be careful not to melt it it just needs the stress relieved ...then let it cool, if it should crack, it can be thermo welded at your local body shop......good luck
