: Going to the Yard Tomorrow for an 8.8....
meyerca 10-26-2001, 12:54 PM Hey All, I am going to a local yard tomorrow to pick up a Ford 8.8. Anyone have any tips on what to avoid and what to look for?
Also, while I am there, I was thinking of picking up a power steering gear box for my YJ. It has been acting up lately. Any ideas on what a good donor would be? Its a 94 YJ.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
CJ5-Man 10-26-2001, 12:57 PM disc brakes and 4.10s are what to look for
make sure you get the part of the driveshaft that bolts to the flange for the ujoint. And getting the ubolt plates would save you some time.
meyerca 10-26-2001, 01:00 PM yea, I am going to be pulling from a 95+ explorer, so disks should be there.
those came with the 4.10s as an option right?
Would I be more likely to find it in a v6 or v8 model?
Blatant 10-26-2001, 01:24 PM What yard are you going to? I got mine from Arizona Auto Recyclers. $550 with 4.10 gears. Make sure you get calipers, at least for cores. If you don't you'll get worked on new ones with no core returns. 4.10s are pretty available, I believe in the Sport models. If worse comes to worse, the diff tag is really easy to read.
Hey, while you're out there, keep an eye open for a Ford 1-ton 4WD. Need a D60 front. Good hunting.

You probably saw the post on AZ_VJC about Ecology Auto Wrecking's 1/2 off sale. I should be able to get a complete 8.8 out the door for 167 and change (at least that is what they said on the phone).
The 1/2 off sale is only available tomorrow so if you are looking for a d60, better get out there tomorrow if you can.
Chris
Blatant 10-26-2001, 01:37 PM Dude: Last time they had a half-off sale on a Saturday, the frigging line waiting to get in the place wrapped all the way around the parking lot. I took one look at that and went home. Good luck to you, though, lemme know what you find.

x658x 10-26-2001, 02:05 PM Hey Chris,
I posted on AZVJC about the 1/2 off sale... Last time I was out at Ecology, I didn't see many newer vehicles. I think the newest I saw might have been one or two late 80's Cherokees. I haven't ever seen ANY Explorers down there.
Dion,
FYI, I didn't see any D60 fronts either, just a couple rears.

well, dont that just suck a twinkie
meyerca 10-28-2001, 01:32 PM Well, ecology auto was a bust in the ford 8.8 department. There were lots and lots of rear 60s though. I didnt have the cash for them, but it they seemed to be pretty easy to find.
Blatant 10-29-2001, 10:35 AM Sorry to hear you had no luck. In this market, that's a $500 axle all day every day. Keep searching, you'll turn one up.
How was the line? And any 60 fronts?
Dion
x658x 10-29-2001, 11:36 AM Dion,
The line to get in wasn't too bad at 8am when I got there, but the line to purchase parts stretched back about 300 feet, took me about 1 hour to get to the front. But I did get away with two 1-ton steering setups for only $28...

The line was quick. Got there at 7 am so there wernt too many people there yet. My brother (Steve aka Waterdog) could tell ya about 60 fronts, there must have been some I am sure, just not positive.
