: For those that use radios in their rigs...

I recently went wheeling with the top off and hit a bit of mud, which ended up getting thrown on my CD radio.

Not wanting to let this to continue to happen, I went to a local boat shop called West Marine. I picked up a "Radio Splash Cover" made by Poly-Planar Inc.

The cover will work with a twin shaft radio or with a DIN sized radio. If you use the DIN size you will have to cut the tabs off for the twin stick radios.

Since the cover is intended for use in a Marine environment, the door is sealed with a foam-rubber gasket, the rear portion is sealed with a gasket as well, and stainless steel hardware is included. Although it protects the front of the radio from water intrusion, it does nothing for the rear of the radio if you happen to swamp your vehicle.

Since the cover is wider than the stock Tracker radio trim plate, you'll have to cut into the dash panel a bit. All that's required is some careful Dremel work and the cover will fit.

I put the cover in place, used a Sharpie to mark the dash...

About 10 minutes later I had this:

The cover has two detents where it will hold itself open...

The first...

...and second...

A couple more shots of it in place:

Since my radio came with a remote control, I can leave the cover closed and not worry about getting it muddy, even after a full days wheeling. :)

I've used these before on my Jeeps, and they work extremely well. The cover locks closed pretty tight and can be a bear to open at times, but with the remote control feature it's not a concern.

There's still a bit of work to do, I'm going to get rid of the white housing and make it a nice black color. I also need to make a new mounting plate for the radio from some aluminum.

I think Mossberg has that one covered...

The cover may help with theft. I used one in my Willys for years and never had problems.

For Mr. 12ga to function properly I gotta catch 'em. I want sumthin that indiscriminately shocks the sheet out of them "touchy-takey" bastages.

Wasn't this covered early last year?

Not bashing, just askin.

Oh.....:flipoff2: WELCOME :flipoff2:

Personally, a radio is nice, but the sounds of an engine, crunching metal and Nature win out for me. :D

Its not a distraction I need. :D

being that its for a Tracker, your writeup is useless to most of us, but its nice to see people doing them anyhow. I'm gonna do the same thing with my next stereo. 1 day on the rubicon and a brand new pioneer DEH-7400MP was having problems ejecting. i think it was the dust. Needless to say, before i put another stereo in my junk i want to make sure it works for awhile

Didn't your mommy teach you to keep your mouth shut if you didn't have anything nice to say? :flipoff2:

It's good to see some new "tech" on here, even if its not suspension mods or engine swaps. Other than Moto's axles, it's been a bit boreing. So, kudo's for posting that. I think its fairly practical and doesn't look bad at all. :D

How can you wheel and have a radio on? Don't you want to be able to hear your CB, or the noises your junk is making? Wouldn't you be worried about not hearing something break, pop, rattle, hiss, or crunch?

1. It's also a daily driver.

2. I'm usually too focused on the truck to hear anything else.

3. Volume control.

4. Power button.

5. Selective hearing.

my radio is missing half its buttons, eats tapes and has only one speaker working. I hope it dies so I can throw the CB in there without caring.

How's that sound?

Any noticable power increase?

Yep, that's mine too.
Stock radio, one stock speaker, tape no worky, buttons don't work.

I can't hear it unless I'm stopped.

CB works good though.
I would like to have a radio, but it's pretty low on the list.

BTW the stock radio quits working after I water hose the dash.
It'll quit for a couple of days then start working agian.
Try that with a pioneer or kenwood.

I have been wanting to get a new radio for my Zuk. The days I drive it to work I would like to hear music while going thru all the red lights. They don't seem to make the old style radios anymore. I have not installed car stereos since I was a teenager. How hard would the new "din" stlye be to put where the stock radio mounts? JCC
