: Photo contest input needed....
ChevyGal 05-01-2003, 05:37 PM I'm planning on entering a photo contest. It's basically a cheesy mall one, but if I do well enough I could win some cash.... not a lot, but enough to help buy my crossover steering. Anyhow, I was hoping for some input from you guys... like what looks good and what you think works best. Here's the categories:
1. Scenic pictorial (color)
2. Scenic pictorial (black & white)
3. Portraits (people only) (color)
4. Portraits (people only) (black & white)
5. Open (color)
6. Open (black & white)
7. Sports
Anyhow, here's what I got (page is slow to load)....
(scans are not the best and resolution is low due to space on my site)
http://chevycagal.homestead.com/MyPics.html
If you put your cursor over a pic, a number will show up so if you like number such and such, you can just say that instead of trying to describe the pics.
I can make any of the pics into black & white for those categories in black & white easily. I can enter up too two pics per category. Anyhow... I'm just looking for opinions, and would appreciate yours. Thanks! :)
Buddha's Ghost 05-01-2003, 05:40 PM OPEN: Black and White. :)

Haha, Sports sound fun. Go to a high school soccer game, and take some pictures. Try to get a really good action shot, like a bicycle kick or something.

Yeah, but what pics do you think I should stick in there is what I am trying to figure out? I am trying to see who likes what and get an idea of what is appealing to the eye and might get me a win here... :)

That actually is a complete mistake. I was using an old Canon AE1 and the film didn't advance right.... so it's a double exposure.... but it came out really cool... :)
mobil1syn 05-01-2003, 08:26 PM for some reason i liked this ... i went ahead an made it b&w

it has that disney magic look to it.
boz88xj 05-01-2003, 10:06 PM Compositionally I think 16 is your best shot.
You could really easily bring out the color in the vegeation in Photoshop.
I know quite a few tricks to make a photo come to life in PS, so if youre having some trouble, let me know, and I can see what I can do.

Thanks for the input guys.... :)
I have PS7 and all kinds of programs I use when taking pics of people who want them retouched and such. But I only use a UV filter on my camera. I don't like filters, and I don't like to tweek em around to adjust stuff. I'd rather try too win under my own skill and the material God provided for me, then do something to em... I guess I am just funny like that.... :D

Gotta love the AE-1's and their tempermental film coil. I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me on my AE-1. I found the best way to prevent this is to wind the film in the canister up till its tight, then load the film, then shoot once and make sure the wind knob is turning with your first few advance shots. Ever since I started doing that, all misloads were caught before the first exposure. :D

2 looks good in black and white although you would want it to show the contrast between the red lady bug and the green of the fern.
Took the liberty to 'intensify' it.

Black poster board in the background... stuck the pepper on a fork, and used a straight pin to stick a small piece of lighter soaked card board on the back. Set up everything, turned the lights off, got my lighter, and lit it on fire and snapped away. Turned out pretty good, and best part was I didn't burn my house down trying this... :D
