IF I wanted to build a killer stereo, why not skip the cookie cutter head units available and just use a powered board and P.A. speakers.

I realize that I would lose Dolby and Multi channel soundtracks but other than that, are their any drawbacks:confused:

Great for volume bad for imaging

EXACTLY;)

my dad was a musician and I had all his junk setup in my room when I was a kid, 6 channel powered amp, monitors, sub. It rocked!!!! and I could play guitar through it on another channel.

Somebody I work with was asking me about it and I really couldn't think of any drawbacks.

Pretty much on the head.

IF you're looking for loud this will work. If you're looking for awesome sound you'll want a good SACD or MDVD player. You get true 5.1-7.1 digital sound with clear separation.

Imaging is not really a issue here, just 2 channel audio.

looking at a Mackie board with eq and a Samson servo power amp:)

You don't want advice from an audiophile then... you want advice from the highschool student who sets up the sound equipment for the rally's.:flipoff2:

These are the guys that just revamped Arco Arenas entire sound system.

If you want to be the big sh*t on the block get these...

The main systems cost you about 6 figures though. :flipoff2:

Edit*You can buy them individually I found. You would have to call on pricing though.

The system my friend is looking at would run $400-$500 for the board and amp, which is comparable to most residential Dolby head units and allow alot more flexibilty.

the specs on THD and freq. response are better than most home units, so if he could find a speaker with something a little less harsh than horns, the sound quality would be comparable.
