driving in to work this morning i saw something i have never seen on my daily 70 mile commute.

kenworth rig with normal trailer, but NO duallys on any axle. had big wide singles on both rear axles on the rig and both axles on the trailer as well.

mustuve been close to 39 x 15 x 20's

weird.

anyone else ever seen this on anything other than a cement truck?

oh.... and this is not tech. :flipoff2:

Those sound like heavy duty steer tires, the kind you see on the front of a dump truck. Don't know why they would use them all around though. MI allowed 250,000 lb trucks (steel haulers), and they just ran many axles.

Its pretty common on gasoline tankers. Less weight = more product carried.

It's Called Super singles. They have been around for a while but not really caught on. It's the same tires the run front of a cement mixers and heavy trucks that get into soft earth.
Problem is if you blow one your dead in the water. And can't make it to the next exit. Rims are expensive. Not as available.

Yep, super singles.
 trying to remember the exact size, something like 465/85R24.5:eek: They are taller than 44"s. They are not too bad of a mud terrain tread pattern either.
My shop (Sacramento Kenworth) is processing almost 70 new pieces of equipment for Teichert Construction this month.
Mixers, flatbeds, service trucks, fuel bowsers, and knuckles. All are running super singles. Real fun when Chicago Rawhide had a manufacturing defect in their wheel seals. We have to go through and replace EVERY seal!! Pulling the big super singles off is not real fun.

Just to point out they are not steer tires. They are much wider than the steer tires used on concrete and pumper trucks. I work at a truck dealer and have only seen them in the trucker magazines that float around work.
