Well, i have been thinking about getting a raptor for a while now. I have had the itch since i sold my 125 a few years ago. My firend rides with a guy who is selling one with a cracked case. Heres what i kow about it.
90 yamaha banshee, green sticker
FMF gold series pipes, and spark arrestors on the side
plastics and a "skin" industries graphix kit
said something about having work done to the reeds
he said the top end was recently rebuilt and when the guy went to put the sprocket on it he did not tighten it, so the chain slipped and bunched up. When it went around it ripped a hole in the case. Still bunched up and lodged between the front sprocket and the case.
In the worst case it would need to be rebuilt, how much does it cost VS rebuilding it your self?
HE wants 1000 for the bike and a set of paddles..
And I figured another 700$ for the case then a new sprocket and chain.
Thanks ya'll

How long has it sat? Was it running good
Are you sure that is why the chain broke the case?
I would be concerned about needing to rebuild other stuff once you got it apart.
If it is your friend these items are probably not a big issue.
OK price I think.

if it's just the cases i'd say it's worth it.

yeah, the bike has been sitting for about 4 months. When i went to look at the bike it was in really good shape, I was impressed and i am a picky ass. I am sure that is how the case was broken because the chain is still lodged where it got stuck where it broke the case.
Is there any possibility of the rod, cam, being bent?
thanks, matt..:rasta:

I doubt you will have to worry about the rods being broken/bent. Chances are it just tore a hole in it and that's all. You can't beat a Banshee for a grand, even if you do have to throw another grand into it. I was lookin for banshees a couple years ago, and the 90's were goin for about 2500, minimum. And those were all beat to hell... I say go for it, take it to a mechanic that works on them, and leave it with him until it's fixed.

dude.
banshee motors are way easy to work on.
if it is the lower case.(they split top and bottom rather than side to side) you can even leave the top end together and lift the upper case with the crank and top end.
i can guide you through. it's way easy. even if you have to take the top end off too.

does anyone know if the cylinder sleeves pull out to be replaced or do they have to be machined?
When doing a compression check how much psi should each cylinder hold? how many kicks to check? I am kinda new to the riding thing (well at least it has been a while). does anyone know about a link / site where i can find this information?
Thanks, Matt

they're cast iron sleeves in aluminum.
i.e. you can just have then bored the next size up.
to tell you the truth i've never done a compresion test on my banshee, but i do know that two strokes tend to have lower compresion than four strokes,(my yz490 was a 6.5 to 1 motor) so if it's looking low it may be ok.
do the two cylinders have even compresion?
banshee motors/trannies are pretty tough. if i were you i'd start with getting the cases welded up or replaceing them and then see if it runs.
do you plan on pumping the motor up while your in it?
also it's a good idea, if you already have the crank out, to have it checked for trueness and welded.

I have been doing some looking on line and found a upper case half in perfect condition for 165$....To me that sounds pretty good. Beating the 675 dollar quote i just got earlier today. I am going to have to replace the whole upper half being that it seperates top and bottom.
Duh, i think i just answered my question.

I still have yet to go back and look at the bike, Just have another question for you guys.
being that the bike is bored .70 over, is there any machining that is going to have to be made to the case?
I am pretty sure the answer is no but i am just checking with the professionals?
thanks, Matt
