well after tearing apart my front dana 60 and getting all the parts for the rebuild I have discovered that it is bent, and get this, not in the tubes but in the HOUSING? crazy yes but true. it turns out that the where the side bearing races press in the frickin thing is not parrallel. it is 1/8 inch closer at the top than the bottom. I didn't notice any cracks, but i can tell by the tubes that they are out by almost 1/2 inch from the ends to the housing.
so
what would you do?
first I'm gonna ask the guy that i got it from if he has another one that he will trade me for, but do you think it is my responsibility when buying used parts to take what I get?
it's been a month and a half since I got it.
should I cut off the knuckles and just cut tubes and get it all pressed into a rear 60 housing?
this would work if I went to front coils as I would be losing the housing side spring perch for leaves
I'm :mad3:  :mad3:  :mad3:  :barf:
so now what?
I've got over $1200 in new parts and old parts in this pile so far
and right now I just need a beer!
any recomendations?

you could use a ford 9" diff and build yourself a hybrid.

Is it just the tube? If so, it's not that hard to fix. Drill out the plug welds, and gring off the knuckle welds. Press the tube out, and press the knuckle off. Then press in a new DOM tube, redoo the plud welds and re press the knuckle on and weld it.
No alignment issues since they are interference fit. All you have to do is make sure the knuckle angle is the same as the other side to keep castor right (angle finder works well for this).

Phil
Or do the For 9" hybrid - that would be cooler ;-)

You are kinda screwed the housing is"sprung" that is not as uncomon as you would think. Many rearend shops have a tool to reface the surfaces that are not parallel. this tool is a long rod with a carbide cutting blade on the end and some bushings that align it in the housing. It is kind of hit and miss though, usually if you reface those surfaces you will be able to get a good contact pattern and everything is OK, but sometimes this is not the case. Also it would be a good idea to magnaflux the housing to make sure it isn't cracked. usually the area that cracks is right where the tube presses in.

just get a rear 60, you can weld a perch to the housing, people do it all the time when doing SOA on dana 44's and it works fine. Just cause the perch isnt molded in there doesnt mean you can't add one, but you will most likely need to add a small block to the other perch to keep everything level

I think he wants the hi pinion and payed a good deal of money to have that. also you have to put new tubes in a rear to make it a front so the tubes can be machined to accept the seal

yes it is a dodge axle
new tubing alone is $90
i can do the machining, but the pressing it a bit out of range for my press
so you think it is possible to either machine it parrallel again or heat it and press it straight?
i'll look into that before I start freakin out
so how do i contact Stacy Brenkenridge?

he already has tubes with seals :p but I guess pressing them out would be a pain, unless he wanted to narrow... just thinking out loud
