ashmanjeepXJ 08-17-2009, 12:08 PM Ive been working on rebuild my front axle on the weekends. All new seals, Re-setup the gears for the new pinnion yoke, new ballistic Cover, new RAM.
I ordered all my Seals from our Pirate Vendor 4wdfactory.com, It was Nice to buy only the seals I needed without buying a kingpin rebuild kit I didnt need.
I replaced some of the hub bearings that were rusted and mud damaged.
I painted up my ballistic cover after welding it only to find it dosent fit with low steer. I cut a big notch out of it to make it work for my steering setup.

Big91RustyBucket 08-17-2009, 01:17 PM Ashman did you check your alighnment? My buddy just got a cover , and we put it on and the tie rod hit. I called Dan at ruff stuff , and he told me to check toe. We did it was off. Once adjusted it was where it needed to be. Hope you didn't do all that for nothing.

ashmanjeepXJ 08-17-2009, 09:05 PM Yah gonna go with a nice ram? Dropping the agro ram?
Single ended 2in 1.125 is a nice ram. i beat mine on a rock so will keep the old as a spare.
chadjans 08-17-2009, 09:14 PM I could never get responsive enough steering using the 2x8x1.125 agro ram. Went to a 2.5x8x1.125 PSC and all is well.

So you went to a ram with a larger bore (more displacement), and the steering became more responsive?
Something sounds funny there...
Twisty 08-18-2009, 04:45 AM First, I had to do the exact same thing with my Ruffstuff cover. I wish they would make it so there was more clearance for steering. Second, I love how 4WD factory has all of the little random seals that you can't buy at parts stores. I ordered a bunch of little seals from them for my 60 build.
Now a question: how are the stock knuckles holding up with low steer? I'm running low steer (on top of steering arm) with a 2.5x8 ram on stock knuckles. Just wondering if you've encountered any issues running it this way with 42s. Or is it only with high steer arms that people sheer the knuckle in half?

Like I said I had the same issue. Toe was off . Did you check your alighnment? According to Dan @ Ruffstuff the tie rod should be 1/8" away from the cover at it's closest point. Check your Toe.

I wire wheeled them down to the bare metal to inspect them for cracks. All good with about 5 years of trail riding on them. The only failures I have seen were with high steer arms. I would never run highsteer on stock outers.

Yes, I did check the alignment. I have between 1/16" and 1/8" toe-in. I had to cut a considerable amount off of the diff cover to make me tie-rod fit. Like I said, I did exactly what ashman did.
Thanks for the reply ashman. I would also never run high steer on stock knuckles. Not without heavy plating anyways.

Last weekend I ran the the AZ marathon. Got 15 of the 16 trails, had to pull cable 5 times, broke another Alloy USA sub shaft in the Annihilator video had a spare, and had an alternator failure that cause me to loose one trail.
http://www.wheelingarizona.com/forums/files/thumbs/t_pb060060_119.jpg (http://www.wheelingarizona.com/forums/files/pb060060_119.jpg)
The alternator had an internal intermittent connection, trail #2 it became a problem. I wedged a stick in there to push on the terminal, that gave me power for most of the day but by the last trail I was done 11.5V and dropping, with electric fans and the posability of needing to winch we headed back to camp -1 trail. I bought a standard GM alt and swapped it for day two 8 more trails.

With the front sucked down to the bumps stops with the winch, you wont see the front flex much on the hill climbs. I agree it needs a rear swaybar and some boat siding.

Yea so far so good. It was alittle hot in The summer on signal peak doing fordyce, It was very high elevation and a very long hill climb. It never over heated but I did stop afew times just to keep it cooler.

Speeking of the overheating, Not sure what fans you are using??? I just got a derale setup. 4000cfm dual fan. 26"x18? for like $264.00. all install parts, relays, mounting tabs, shroud. This setup is for my buick but i matched it up to the griffin part# you gave me a wile ago for the rad for my MJ and I think it would work. its dual fans so you could probably set up one to go on in one range, than set the other to turn on earlier.. Only down side, sucker draws 50 amps. But the price for the package is nice..

ashmanjeepXJ 03-02-2010, 06:42 PM Parting out is only good when it leads to upgrades...:flipoff2:
I sold off the silly bird catcher scoop I had for years. It was fun but not practical, the small air filter would get clogged often making me suck more propane when it starved for air.
I also gave up on the Propane, it worked fine but was tired of filling propane tanks and lugging them around. The mixer kit is pending sale just need to sell the tanks then Ill buy an TBI or EFI kit to put on it. Down time has begun.
Im seriously itching to cut off the ExoCage work and start over but dont have the money right now. Ill do the fuel system upgrade now and wait for the Jenny Craig plan.
Im planning to have some parts by the end of the month. Ill have to get some use out of the FJ.:flipoff2:
black nasty 03-03-2010, 05:50 AM Wow Ashman that thing is amazing! When the first video started I was like he's not gonna make that...is he? I am beyond impressed!
Xjcrawler736 03-03-2010, 07:01 AM I think if you go over an injection setup you are going to get some power back. Get a good cell and pickups and you will never have to worry about anything on the big climbs.
I remember you said you couldn't tell the difference between the old 350 and the new stroker motor. Hopefully tuning the new fuel injection will gain you some hp in the bucket seat dyno.
havoc319 03-08-2010, 10:55 PM You going with a MPI kit? tbi? factory like camaro or vett??
Is it that the propane could not flow enough for a good motor or just a bunch of things making it not as usefull??
I almost said that I wanted to keep the old XJ and just rip it apart again and do it over but instead i just started on a totally new rig.... Is it worth it to totally pull the cage and start over or just wait and start a totally new rig??

I havent decided on a kit yet. So far I like the FAST EZ-EFI kit best. About $1600-1800 can get me into one of those, it uses 4 fuel injectors at the base of the throttle body.

The MPI kits with timing control are better but in the $3k range.

Ash, That seems like alot of money when you can pick up a newer vortec motor, harness and computer for around $1500. Im not sure if it will bolt right up to your tranny. We just bought a 2007 5.3 vortec for $1500 with computer and harness. Just seems like if your going to spend the money you could pick us something newer and lighter. Just my .02
ashmanjeepXJ 04-02-2010, 12:08 PM I got some parts Yesterday, but wont have time to work on it for two weeks.
Fast EZ-EFI master kit and specter intake.
First pics from my cell phone, Im ready to be not impressed.
brokenparts 04-02-2010, 12:42 PM why the switch from propane?
brokenparts 04-02-2010, 12:59 PM nevermind... searched back and found it.
havoc319 04-02-2010, 10:49 PM Holley had tried to copy something like this with the throttle body looking like a regular carb??
This is a nice system and your right that for the price this should work nice but its also the same thing like ok spend the money on this or the propane setup..
The only reasons why i went propane is i did not want the wire mess, gas slop all over, fuel pump, sensors, and just parts that if broke, would not be able to sort of hack back together to limp off the trail.
A new vortec would be nice but than ok 1500 on a nice motor, harness but than a few more to get it bolted to the trans?? He has alot invested in the motor in the truck now. Just get it to run right and it should be set.
Now on a different note, Alot of my buddys are all race heads, and are moving to getting huge vacume pumps on the motor to get the oil vapors down, vacume on the motor to keep the seals from blowing out, and almost a 30hp gain. Trying to see how that would make it any better on a crawl or go fast rig.
Anyway, looks good! I may get this system for my buick if it flowed enough. What CFM is the throttle body??1000??
ashmanjeepXJ 05-16-2010, 07:21 PM It only took me a month..:flipoff2: Ive had to drop the Cherokee priority did some upgrade on the FJ and did our annual Josh memorial run. good times.
YouTube - WheelingArizona.com 2nd Annual Josh Memorial Run 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si8teUroFxY)
So today I drove the Cherokee for the first time with the FAST EZ efi kit, my first words were HOLY SHIT as it id a 20 ft burnout in high range!! It feels 4X faster then before.
Afew complaints with the FAST EZ kit, it came "complete" with hoses fittings and pump and regulator. The hose was good quality but they needed to provide like 3 FT more for both pressure and return lines. The AN6 fittings supplied would not work with the hose, it has a protective wrapping that prevents the hose from expanding not allowing the push on fittings to work. I had to buy all new fittings and additional hose.
The Fuel cell sits in channel with foam padding, it used 10 of the top bolts to hold it in place. It has a roll over valve and I added a ball valve to the vent line.
I got a new hood because I ditched the birdcatcher intake, I got a 9in K&N airfilter with a dust net.
So far Im impressed, starts easily, its is in learning mode so its not consistent throttle response yet. The hand held programmer is easy to adjust, the idle and fuel pressure are the only manual adjustments the rest are controlled by the programmer.

ashmanjeepXJ 05-23-2010, 08:41 AM I got a TJ Antirock swaybar from a buddie for a good price, I converted the bushings to work with box tube and found a mounting spot up high behind the fuel cell. Ill need 28in links from the arms to the axle. Its a 36in sway bar the 16in arms will be 35 degrees at full up travel and -20 degrees at full drop, Currie said they are rated for up to 90 degrees of twits, Ill have 56degrees. Its only a 16in arm on a .745 torsion bar so I might lengthen the bar to 20in later on to make it softer. Need to get some 1in tube for the links and Ill be able to finish mounting it.

ashmanjeepXJ 06-05-2010, 07:27 AM Im trying to convince myself what octane will be safe with my motor.
Static Compression is 11:1
Dynamic compression calculated by this
http://www.wallaceracing.com/dynamic-cr.php
383 engine specs:
4in Bore
3.75 stroke
5.7in rods
Comp Cams CCA-k12-206-2, duration at .050 lift 212/212, 110degree sep
ABDC 56
Quench .040
Head 64cc 1.6 rockers, .469in spring lift
Piston 7cc
I get a Dynamic Compression Ratio of 8.97:1
My cranking cylinder pressure should be 184PSI
I will test my cranking pressure to see if these numbers are realistic.
With some research I found this generic table for cranking pressures and Octane recommendations.
Octane---Cranking Pressure Min---Goal Cranking pressure
93---------------190---------------200-210
91---------------180---------------190-200
87---------------160---------------170-180
Dynamic compression range (not static) and octane generic recommendations
87---------------8.0:1
91---------------7.5-8.5:1
93---------------8.8-9.0:1
To prevent Detonation many other factors should be considered.
Water temp.
Every 10 degree drop in water temp can net .25 more compression ratio without detonation. I run about 200 degrees if I get down to 170, I can shave 0.75 of my compression ratio (from a detonation risk stand point)
Doubling up head gaskets would lower my static compression but screw up my quench distance, would be less compression but more likely to detonate/ping.
Cold air inlet will help. I want to route my new air filter through the firewall
My head castings were cleaned up before installed that will help prevent detonation.
Aluminum heads help prevent detonation by dissipating heat quickly.
Coated exhaust headers would help keep heat off the heads but I dont have those.
Humidity helps prevent detonation, No luck here in AZ.
Colder spark plugs, larger spark gap and reduced ignition advance.
Heavy weight, high torque loads at low RMS are most likely to cause detonation (what we do all the time)
Normal Pump gas in AZ is 91octane, 93 would be about perfect. If my crank pressure really comes in as low as I calculated I think Im safe to try 91 and if I get pinging start using some additives.
The chart below would recommend like 97 octane. 100 octane if I run the engine hot.
xj9140 06-05-2010, 10:59 AM ashman, do you know the octane of propane?? isn't it like 100 or something?

head gasket thickeness? volume in cc of the piston at tdc? dome piston or flat top?? compressed gasket thickness?
If you have 11-1, was kinda comming up with 11.5 Depending on the timming and temp, 93 is going to be min running it. 9-1, good timming and mixture, 93 should not be a problem on 87. If you can keep the motor temp down low and timming right, you should not get any detonation but if you have 11-1??? your temp issues are going to get a little worse. If you run that motor to lean, your egt's are going to be through the roof and heat up the entire motor compartment. It will ping and than get some beatings on your motor. Did you by any chance debur the piston edges? Kinda helps.

I got the new coils installed, ballistic (blue coil brand color black)
6in-100
14in-275
16in-400

14in-150
16in-200
The old coils sagged about 1in total.
This will give me more stability, about the same ride height and will soak up bumps better at higher speeds.

Yea the 6in was a good choice.
Im not 100% happy with the keeper coil. If the slider was longer so it bottomed out as the coil blocked out I wouldent have this problem with the keeper.
chadjans 06-29-2010, 06:39 PM The wire on the 20 pounder is smaller and the slider bottoms out on the upper stop and I see a similar shape with my setup. They all seem to be the same.

What do you think your corner weight is upfront?

What do you think your corner weight is upfront?
Chad
Sprung weight calculated by spring rates 3220Lbs:
940 lbs per front corner X2
670 lbs per rear corner X2
Unsprung weight estimate:
Front axle, tires + some suspension 1100 lbs
Rear axle, tires + some suspension 900 lbs
Estimated total weight 5220 lbs, 5900lbs with water in the front tires, I think its heaver just never scaled it.
I lost some weight from the propane bottles to the fuel cell but added it right back with the new sway bar.

680lbs of water weight, really?
or is that bone dry weight... then fueled, watered, drivered, etc?

To the top of the rim on a 42in tire with a 16.5in rims holds about 40 gallons of water. 80 ish gallons is about 640-680 lbs. The Rim/tire with water are about 480lbs each rolling weight.
RedZeppelinXJ 09-14-2010, 01:09 AM just sat here and read all 32 pages instead of doing homework lol.....hello 3am
awesome build man.....that thing is rediculous
ashmanjeepXJ 10-19-2010, 05:37 PM Got the cherokee out on the weekend did two trails. First time out the with new EFI system, sway bar, and front coils.
We did a short but technical trail, my son took the video not great but ok.
YouTube - DH trail in Arizona 10/16/2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09hvxHtO_t8)
The EFI system is a self learning system, it needs to be setup with the programmer then driven for fine tuning. It goes into learning mode once its at operating temp. Right as its warmed up I fall into the crack and it really messed with the tune, ran like crap after that, then I reset it and was great for the rest of the trail and all the next day.
I love the new spring rate on the front and the rear swaybar.
The fuel cell leaked out of the top oval plate I tightened it up some more and it stopped. The EFI is alot of power.
I ran a mix of 91 octane and Torqo 110 leaded race fuel 3:1
ashmanjeepXJ 11-10-2010, 09:38 PM Did a pretty insane wheeling weekend with my buddy Alan, 10 trails in two days. The EFI acted up again I had to adjust the idle again but now it seams to be working great. I only used 10 gallons of fuel, typically Id use 20 gallons of propane to do afew less miles. I ripped a tire we had to plug and my ps pump started leaking so had to replace that one evening.
These tire plugs are the best:

qty20 14in part number NRF
http://www.gemplers.com/img/rope-plug-refills-NRF.jpg
Take those cut them into thirds and tie two knots in one end (inside tire end). We patched up a 3in sidewall cut and wheeled it all day.
Some video from our trip taken by my 11yo.

I will have to get some of those plugs. I need to replunish my repair kit.

SnailMan 12-07-2010, 08:38 PM Damn Dave jeeps lookin pimp, wish I would have caught you before assembling the 383 the first time. Would have told you with the roller rockers you needed longer than stock studs and that you over tightened them the first time. You wanna tighten the rocker nuts till you have no up and down play but can still twist the rush-rod, then turn over the motor and tighten until you can twist but no up and down movement, repeat untill you no longer have up and down play without tightening by then you shouldn't be able to twist the push-rods either the 1 half turn each, personally I mark the nut and stud with a punch and check the nuts after the break in period, But dude Jeep looks great, also I would have pointed this out to you as well lol
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/efi/pf_chevy.shtml
Its what I'm running on my truck and runs GREAT and for the price you have Real fuel injection and not a hyped up TBI Kit. Hope everythings running great and love the new tow rig lol
ashmanjeepXJ 01-07-2011, 04:57 PM Back on Jackstands...:flipoff2:
The 42in TSLs had their run, I planned on buying 42in pitbull rockers but the 16.5s are not in stock and looking at 6-8 weeks. I have on order some 42in PBR 17s. Im still parting out my old tires and wheels and dont have new rims yet.
Ill miss spectating KOH this year but Its time for the change. Im tired of running trails where the optional lines I cant make due to my tires. I want BFG reds but 2year trail life and many sidewall cuts dosent fit my reality.
Motor home we took to CA imperial sand dunes over Christmas, was kickass and got about 10 MPG towing all the family quads (not a jeep trip).
SnailMan 01-07-2011, 09:02 PM Pics or it didn't happen!!!! :flipoff2:
10mpg is pretty DAMN Good Dave my Volvo (Work truck) gets 7.2 average and thats pretty damn good, My Dads Bus (Rear End Diesel pusher Cummings 6V) gets about 14 if hes lucky Si I say your in really good shape man.
Looking forward to seeing what ou come up with next man. Or do you think you can sit there and look at the Jeep on stands and NOT think to yourself "I wonder if........." lol

or did I miss it in the post?
I've got the same issue on my 60 using 1.75 AL tierod... I can get within .5" of the steering stops but the tierod is into the cover hard. So I want to clearance it now before I get the rig all put back together...
I can't go hi-steer for 2 reasons:
1... frame is in the way at full bump
2... stock knuckles (for now) :D

I think I just used some 2in 120wall HREW. After you weld it go over your welds with JB weld on the inside. Good insurance it wont leak. Just a tiny pinhole will attract dust and look like an oil tanker leak.

You must be joking. Epoxy on the inside of a gearbox is bad idea. That shit falls off, it will fuck shit up real quick.

No Im not joking, Ive had good results with this.
A JB-weld chunk will crumble if It came loose and got in the gears.
Ill post pictures when it fails. :D
MONUMENTS 01-20-2011, 01:17 PM Everything that you have done to this thing is so far over my head.

I guess its fine on a low speed off-road rig. :DI was mostly concerned about the goop in the bearings after the crumbling process.
chadjans 01-20-2011, 03:22 PM Take a hammer to a chunk of JB Weld. You will realize it isn't a big deal.
ashmanjeepXJ 03-13-2011, 08:23 AM I bought Trail Ready HD aluminum rims, 17X8. but needed to modify them so I could easily add and take out water in the front tires.
I ended up drilling a 9/16in hole .7in from the beadlock mounting ring surface.
http://wheelingarizona.com/forums/download/file.php?id=11049&t=1
I used a -6 AN bulk head fitting for my water fill hole. The Tefelon and O-rings did not seal the bulk head good enough. The fitting should be welded but I JB welded two for now, later Ill have the other 3 rims welded.
http://wheelingarizona.com/forums/download/file.php?id=11050&t=1
I drilled the hole so the bulk head fitting touches the rim edge so taking the cap on and off will not spin the bulk head fitting breaking the seal.
http://wheelingarizona.com/forums/download/file.php?id=11051&t=1
I put a 3/8in 12in long rubber hose on the bulk head fitting, this will let me drain the water out like a fuel pickup hose. Air through the top valve stem will push the water out from the bottom of the tire.
http://wheelingarizona.com/forums/download/file.php?id=11052&t=1
The pitbulls are .9in thick beads, I use 3/8in jam nuts as .25in spacers so I could clamp the beadlock rig metal on metal. It will keep the bolt tight and prevented ring coning. The inner bead held air while mounting even when it was 2in from the inner bead. The slop of the rim is very gradual so I think the inner bead will hold well. The safety bead is about .7in from the rim edge so my .9in pitbull bead sits on top of the center of the safety bead. I think thats ok.

ashmanjeepXJ 03-27-2011, 07:50 PM Buzzy weekend.
Got the pirate4x4 banner test fit on the RV for our booth at WErock next weekend.
Bought a ktm 450 XC-F
Took 7 min per tire to fill with water with the rim mods.
cut the door bars off the cherokee and put on the old doors, cut the stinger off, lowered the dash bar. Looks killer now.

ashmanjeepXJ 04-06-2011, 09:18 PM Last weekend Steve spotted me to 2nd place in the WERock sportsman class.
Cant say I completed all gates but we did drive on every course and broke a stub shaft on the last gate of the last course. Was a great time transitioning from our Judging roles to competitors. I love driving in front of a crowd.
First video with the GoPro Ill try a different setting for our next video.
My wife ran the pirate4x4 booth handing out stickers Lance donated, We also sold WAZ shirts from our booth. First time towing with the international did great just as slow as with out towing the jeep.
My wife is all set, wants to sell the jeep and buy a turnkey Campbell pro mod buggy with our house down payment, I keep talking her out of it... well see.
6 of the Tucson WE rock trophys went to AZ undertakers members... get it.

ashmanjeepXJ 04-06-2011, 09:49 PM nice man... did you get the issues with the fast efi worked out?
It did ok, I had one restart in gear that reved to 2 grand and over powered the brakes almost rolling me. My pickups in the tank didnt work pointed very steep nose down knew i needed the walboro pickup. As long as I started it and let it settle out before driving it seamed to do better. fix it this weekend wheel it next weekend.

DutchVDub 04-07-2011, 09:09 PM Sweet video man, and congrats on 2nd place. Your rig looked awesome, and best part is it still looks like an XJ.
ashmanjeepXJ 04-18-2011, 06:47 AM The XJ is forsale. Illl set a starting price this afternoon, if it dosent sell its getting parted out.
Talking with Randy at Jimmy's4x4 to build me a new narrow chassis with a twisted customs grand cherokee hood. Working out the details now.
Went wheeling on the wheekend, Day 1 my power steering pump blew an O-ring $1.6 part but going to town and rebuilding it lost the day. Day two we did two fun trails. Im really ready for a narrower chassis and with our house sale and renting I cant build my own chassis nor do I have time too.
CrawlerReady 04-18-2011, 03:17 PM That is one VERY bad ass XJ. Very clean work! Shame you're selling it but I can't wait to see what you do with a new chassis.

ONEtonXJ 04-27-2011, 08:59 AM its worth that.... to me anyway
EDIT: plans if it does sell??
EDITING THE EDIT: my bad lol read the tube buggy post
dozer_xj 04-27-2011, 09:05 AM I think your running into the same problem I had trying to sell my xj. The parts are there and the price is reasonable but:
1. no one has that kind of cash laying around for a toy
2.no one wants to spend that much on an xj (if it were a wrangler it would be a differnt story) Everyone who drops that kind of cash wants a "real jeep"
IMO
good luck with the sell. hate to see it go. been watching this thread since highschool and im a senior in college now.

20min and lost of Unearth music. GoPro Hero in mode 3 720 wide, scratched the lens you can see its foggy in the center, $10 for a lens but just wasent careful with it.
5 rig 5 trails, then 2 trails on day two.

Gotlift01 09-21-2011, 08:08 AM I think this thread is due for a little bit of an update. For those of you who don't know, I'm the new owner of this Monster! I've been staying in touch with Ashman ever since I bought this from him, and he suggested I post up some pics and what not....keep the legacy going if you will! :D
When I saw this go up forsale I knew I had to have it. Like many of you, I've watched this build from the start, and couldn't let it fall into someones hands that would take it out and destroy what Dave had worked so hard to build! I sent him a PM saying that I wanted it, so we arranged to meet halfway at Jimmy's 4x4 so I could pick it up.
I purchased some new tires and beadlocks since he was keeping his for his new buggy. I originally wanted to run the new MTR's, but being on national back order, it just plain wasn't going to happen. So I bought these:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Gotlift01/Pitbulls.jpg

Here it is right after I got it home:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Gotlift01/monster2.jpg

After having a conversation with my wife and son, we decided it needed some paint. It was nicknamed the Monster, so we decided to paint it Monster Energy green:

Nick crossing golden crack on golden spike moab - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxYOTxFdzZA&feature=related)
I'll post up some pics when I get our laptop back up and running. I'll also try to keep this up to date with some tech and what not as I make changes. This winter I plan on a few nice upgrades, so stay tuned! :D
DutchVDub 09-21-2011, 08:24 AM Glad to see it's being used and kept pretty much in tact, that's a testament to how well it was built in the first place. I'd love to check this thing out this weekend and test fit those tires like we had discussed. Hit me up, I'll drive the jeep down to you so you can see just how much better your rig is. :)
Gotlift01 09-21-2011, 06:06 PM Sounds good man, Saturday work for you?

EDIT: I forgot to tell you...I took care of that loud ass fuel pump. I ended up tossing a Walbro pump on it. Sooo much quieter now.
Did you change the pickup? I have a hard line going to the back of the tank so when your like 1/4 tank and pointed down a hill it will die.
My plans were to add the walbro pickups qty 4, one in each corner. They wont suck air.
Gotlift01 09-22-2011, 08:17 AM I haven't messed with the pickup yet. Im going to add a sending unit for a fuel gauge and while I'm in there I'll redo the pickup.

I think I'm going to go this route with the pickups. Like you said, one on each corner is ideal. I know Tim at Liquid Iron was putting together something pretty damn similar, so I may give him a call when I get ready to do this to get everything I need to build it.
Gotlift01 04-23-2012, 09:27 AM Haven't updated this in quite awhile. Here are a few pics from my Moab trip last September.

Gotlift01 04-23-2012, 09:31 AM Had a lot of stuff I wanted to do to it over the winter, but life happened, and funds were tight and I just flat out didn't have the time or motivation to get it done.
I'm heading to Moab in 2 weeks, so the crunch is on to get a few things done.
I needed to do something about the doors. Dave had run a door bar, and I thought about going that same route, but being as tall as I am, it was going to make it a pain to get in and out all the time on the trail. I decided to make some tube doors for it. The tube doors were from my 4-door '01 XJ that I never used them on, so I cut them apart and extended them 9" to fit the 2-door. I got some foam from Home Depot to wrap them with, and I'll probably end up wrapping them in electrical tape as the foam is incredibly easy to rip.
It'll also be nice having an arm rest. Long days on the trail get a little uncomfortable without something to lean on.

Gotlift01 04-23-2012, 09:36 AM I also cut out some of the inner fender. It was already cut for the coil overs, but that metal had seen better days, and was getting pretty gnarly looking, and also put a small slice into one of my tires when I stuffed it hard out in Moab. I originally was going to cut out the entire inner fender flush against the fire wall, but to do that, I need to remove the front fenders so I can get a clean cut. With the exo on it, I cannot get the fenders off....so that'll have to wait for now.
I still need to clean up the cuts a little bit with the grinder.

Gotlift01 04-23-2012, 09:54 AM I've also done a few little mods here and there that aren't really picture worthy.
One big thing I wanted to change was the brake pedal. It was really close to the "go" pedal, and having big ass feet, I was always getting my feet tangled up trying to use the gas and brake. I have an '89 XJ that I parted out awhile ago that I've been robbing parts off of here and there, and the clutch and brake assembly was still in it. I ended up cutting off the clutch pedal since it angles away from the gas pedal, cut the existing brake pedal off of this one, and welded the clutch pedal on. Now I have a good 4"+ between the two, and I barely have to move my left foot to get to the brake pedal now.
I ordered some new tail lights for it as well. The brackets and the lights and seen their fair share of rocks, and were beat to hell. I ordered the same brackets that Dave used before, but I went with a black LED tail light this time.

Since Dave kept his Anti-rock for his new buggy, I've been wheeling without one. After the trip to Moab, I decided it would be a wise investment to buy one. While I never felt very tippy....watching some video and looking at pictures told me different. I ordered a new one from Poly Performance which I'm hoping will be here sometime this week.
I'm also thinking about installing some new valve covers. The ones that are on it don't have baffles in them. I noticed while out in Moab....there were a few times where I got blitzin' through some of the desert sections and noticed when I came to a stop, the motor was smoking. I came to the conclusion that when the motor is in higher RPMs, it's slinging oil out of the breather hole and spraying the motor with a fine mist of oil. It's not a huge deal since I rarely go fast in it, but it's something I need to fix eventually.
I've also been having some issues with the FAST fuel injection. It's for the most part been pretty trouble free, but I'm having an issue where if I shut it off and then restart it, the computer isn't picking up the O2 sensor. When it does that, the motor hunts for idle really bad....it'll fluctuate 500-700 rpm. I contacted FAST about it, and they are thinking the O2 sensor might be going to hell and suggested I purchase a new one for $95.00. There is also a software update for the computer that I need to upload. Evidently that fixes the cold start issues, and also fixes and issue where on every start up, the motor will rev up to about 1,700 RPM, and then slowly drop down to the normal idle.
Other than that, it's just been a few small things here and there that I've been doing. Hopefully I'll have some time this summer to knock out a few more projects I have in mind for it.
ashmanjeepXJ 04-23-2012, 11:53 AM On the FAST injection issues, look for a vacuum leak. get a fire extinguisher ready and spray Either starting fluid on the intake while its running looking for a leak that will raise the RPMs.
Ive heard some of the new out of the box FAST kits had sealing issues, over torqued or bad seals.
Door bars look safer.
Thanks for the update, good to see it getting used.
Did you add the fuel pickups? I did on the new buggy and its working great. I used brass tubing and compression fittings from Ace Hardware, 3/8 Teed to 1/2in Teed to 5/8in

I originally thought it might be a vacuum leak, but it is intermittent. Usually when I start it and it starts hunting for idle, I shut it back off, wait a few seconds, and restart it and the problem is gone (sometimes it'll take a try or two)....idles perfectly normal and runs great. I've gone half a day out on the trail where it's started fine every time, and then out of the blue it'll start acting up. I plugged in the digital monitor so I could see what was happening. When everything is working proper, the O2 sensor is supposed to have a check mark beside it. But when the idle is funky, the check mark isn't there...so that's why FAST is thinking it's a bad O2 sensor. I need to inspect for vacuum leaks just to be sure though.
And no, I haven't fixed the pickups yet. So far it hasn't been an issue. Most of the trails I've run, I've been able to do them on around a half tank of fuel, so I haven't gotten low enough to have an issue. It's definitely on the top priority list to get those done. I'm hoping once I get back from this next trip I'll have the time to do it.
Gotlift01 04-23-2012, 12:18 PM I've also had zero cooling issues. I was a tad worried with all the problems it seemed to have before I bought it, but I'm very pleased with how it's been cooling. I have yet to see over 190* even when pushing it up a long steep climb. Normally it runs very cool....almost to cool I think, its been running around 165-170* even with temps in the high 80's - low 90's.
Gotlift01 04-26-2012, 01:40 PM The Antirock showed up yesterday, so I got that installed last night.

ashmanjeepXJ 04-26-2012, 02:12 PM Youll love it for hill climbs so much more stable.
Im running mine one hole in and its alittle stiffer. Play with it some youll like it.
Gotlift01 04-26-2012, 02:21 PM I'm pumped to test it out. It did pretty good before, but I bet it'll do great now.

All props go to Ashman for doing a hell of a job building it!
Gotlift01 04-26-2012, 06:56 PM I ordered up a 20" LED light bar from Trail Worthy Fab the beginning of this week and it showed up today. I wanted to mount it somewhat low so it wasn't sticking up above and hopefully protect it a little bit.
The mounting was pretty simple. I just held it up, did some measuring, drilled holes into the tube and tapped them. The light came with mounting bolts, so I used those with some red loc-tite....it's rigid as hell!
I didn't get around to wiring it up tonight, but I'll post pics when I do.

ashmanjeepXJ 04-26-2012, 08:56 PM So now when you go night wheeling your buddies can see you still need a winch? :flipoff2:
Im itching for some nice LED lights. BAD ASS.... I have $10 a pr halogens on my buggy..:shaking:
Gotlift01 04-27-2012, 11:07 AM So now when you go night wheeling your buddies can see you still need a winch? :flipoff2:
 I thought about that after I ordered the light...I should have bought a damn winch instead! :shaking::laughing: A winch will be my next purchase.
I had a hell of a time seeing at night on our last trip to Moab. It seemed like every day we were heading out of the trail in the dark, and those stock lights just weren't cutting it. I've always wanted a light bar, but for how little I'm actually going to use it, I couldn't justify spending $800-$1,000 on one. I ended up picking this one up for $250 shipped! :D Granted it's not a name brand like Rigid or VisionX...but screw it, as long as it works for a year or two, I think it'll be a decent purchase! I'm thinking about throwing down the money for the 40" bar for up top, and putting the 20" on the front somewhere.

Just put the 20" light bar in the hole for the winch since obviously you'll never get one. :flipoff2:

I know of a nice new shiny one sitting in a certain persons garage I'm sure he won't notice is missing!

Yep, still in the box and everything. Until I get off my arse ad finish welding this bumper to mount it too.
Gotlift01 04-30-2012, 08:26 PM Swapped out the 35 spline Warn hubs for a set of Spidertrax chromoly drive flanges.
