Don't want to see Rock Skis. Want to see pics of cut off rockers with designs using the frame or just body.
Here's what I plan on doing...I have cut off the rockers and left space for a 3/4" x 3" box to weld in the gab shown in the picture below with the arrow. I can tuck this into the gap and weld it in where the dashes are. And it will run past the pilars so I will add fresh steel and weld there too. Hoping that will give me some strenght around the door frame, but frankly don't care either. After all..she's notpretty.
The sliders (I am thinking 2x6 1/4 wall so 2 inches stick out beyond the door) can be either off the frame or welded directly to body on to this 3/4 x 3 box and strenghten via the bed/body cross members etc. I am thinking body....Yes, this transfers pressure to the body mounts. But, I have seen several that don't connect to the frame. Are they holding up...taco the body? I'd rathern not connect to the frame and have maximun clearance and a cleaner look.
Please let me know your thoughts and show me pics

Here is a picture of mine. It is just welded to the areas like you show not to the frame, I used some 2x5x3/16 so I have about 1" out and that seems good to me but I have seen 2" and it's not to bad IMO but not what I wanted.

You are who I need to talk to... How Hard have you smacked that thing....any real hard hits? Detail your worst hit for me if you could. I would prefer 3/16 wall like yours, but have 1/4 wall for free.

Marlon my 2x4 channel is only welded to the body. I slipped off a rock and landed about the same as EBSteve's pic. It shoved the rear of the door sill up enough to not be able to close the door. It was about a 2ft drop with a some mo-mo. I was suprised given that you hear pretty good things about body mounted stuff holding up. The channel did not bend but the body did. No pics but you 've seen it anyway, go get some ginko balboa and you might remember what it looked like :flipoff2:

here's my 4x4 1/4" wall welded into the body, it works, but I am noticing some cracking and buckling in the door posts, so I'm cutting the 4x4 off, and will put a thin piece in to support the door opening, and a frame mounted nerf in for the actual impact protection...

I hope this helps out. The picture is a little bright .
I worked my rock slids in with my body lift. The rear one goes all the way across to the other side. These was welded to the frame. Body bushings went on the top of them. Works really well.

I forgot to mention that I used 2x4" tube. These have better clearance than mounting them on the side of the frame.

I welded mine straight to the body... used 2x6" .120 wall square tubing and cut the outside lip off it... then I mated 2" .180 wall tubing to the edge and welded it in cutting the end at an angle...

Great pics! Very helpful. I think I am going to use the frame. Still not sure which way I will go. If I use the frame, I know I will be fine. I think I will decide when I pick up the mig gun. My doors barely work now and any more tweakage and who knows.
Is 1/2 inch gap enough between the body and slider?

I think the gap between mine is less than 1/2" . The only thing that I wished I did was put a strip of metal under the rocker that is left so it want sag. I think over time it will.

Don't have pics...but when I had my bronco I used the cage to mount the sliders.
Get under your bronco and look up at where the cage bolts come through the body. Make two pedestals down to where you want the rocker to be. I made mine out of receiver tubing. Then out at a 90 to the actual rocker. Once again I used receiver tubing. then i used 2x4 3/16 for the rocker. they never moved and when i wanted to make them look pretty, i just unbolted them from the cage. Tested on Rubicon and Hammers.
Sorry, I don't have pics to better help describe.

jbcruiser ,
Sounds like a really good Idea.
What do you do with an EB with a secondary gas tank. Can you still cut out the rockers?(this Q is for a buddy of mine)
To me if you cut out the rockers then the gas tank is exposed .

Here is the begining of mine.pics (http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/killahoesrk1/lst?&.dir=/&.src=ph&.view=t&start=1&.rand=5703810963)
1 3/4 tube welded to the frame. I will be tying to the A and B hoops feet for cage tie in and for vertical support. I was going to give it the boatside affect, but will wait till the rest of the body comes off in the next distent rebuild.

Both Broncos I did this on had secondary tanks. One was a 77 and the other was a 71. Yes when you cut the rocker the tank is exposed. once you build the new rocker it will be protected again.
One issue I did run into. On the 77 it had room for the pedestal to fit between the filler neck and the body (assuming you are using 2x2). On the 71 I had to get a little more creative with the filler neck.
I just noiticed on my earlier post I wrote that I used 2x4...woops. I used 3x3 square(for the rocker). Sorry about that. Of course it doesn't really matter what you use. That is usually a personal preference. I like the 3x3 because it looked more like the stock lines. I brought it out from the body even with my front and rear flares.

what you do is.. get rid of the stupid aux tank :D
http://www.bcbroncos.com has a 25 gallon main that goes in the rear and fits just fine with or without body lift. i reccomend that.

I agree on the 25 gal. tank if you gots the funds.
I would like to do that to mine since all I have is the one in the rear. But I am gonna wait till I cut some more of my body off. I may just order a fuel cell.

here's mine - they are 6" wide with a 45 degree angle cut along the outside edge, front and rear. Mounted to the frame via three legs to provide some triagleation (not much , but hey)

They are mounted with ~1/4" gap between the top of the slider and the bottom of the door sill - built a small box out of 1x1x1/8" square tubing to reinforce door sill area.

Anyone have pics of how they have done this with a glass tub. I am trying to decide how to go about this on my Bronco's glass tub. I am a little nervous about cutting the rocker off the glass tub. That is what holds everthing together and I am afraid it would compromise alot of strength. I will probbaly build a guard that attaches thru the rocker and sitsup against it and weld it to the frame/ cage. I am open to suggestions. Thanks. Brett

I like the final pic. Looks clean and very functional. Weight? I am guessing 50-60 LBS each side?

Bent70... Looked at all your pics and would like to see more of the front arm mount at the frame. Is the passenger wristed? Full width...65"? Interesting shock mount through the tub. Looks like your future is no tub...as may be mine. Coil pivots at the mounts?
Marlon
PS...get some seats. Them are done :D

Didn't think of that...Good Idea. Plus a stronger cage in the end.
I have the 25 gallon tank so now worries. I do recommend it too.

I'll take some more pics, but will email them to you it's faster than uploading with my shitty dialup:mad:
Passenger side is a single link these are my second set since the first ones bent. 2" .563 wall now:D
Future may be no tub, and those mounts will for sure be gone too. I was bored didn't have a bender and wanted to mount my shocks through the bed to be cool:massey:
pivots at the mounts, Highly recomended to everyone.
Oh-yea 69" the real fullwidth:flipoff2:

yea, somewhere around there - heavy enough to be PITA to get them lined up etc for welding by yourself;) They have worked well though - have taken a few hard hits on them and no signs of weakness, Ive had to use the ramped front edge several times to get up and over a rock with them.
- also really nice to semi use as pivots on rocks when on tight trails - just put the rail into the rock, crank the wheels and give it some gas:D
