ok, one of my buddies has an '82 scrambler. got run off the road a few months ago and bent his rear axle. now my question is what would be a good upgrade. not looking for anything extreme and definitely not that expensive. he's interested in putting a stock axle back in, but i'm trying to convince him to upgrade while he's at it.
please help, its been retired to the field until we can fix it! <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

You could find a 9" cheap enough for it most anywhere. Parts are cheap for these as well.

dana 44s are pretty cheap, most can bolt right into a scrambler with few mods.

Ditto on the above, 9's, and 44 rears can be had for 50 bucks around these parts.
Also if he's not wheeling it another aaahh20chooo would be fine IMO.
And could probably be found for free.

I dont know of any 9" fords that are the right width, so you would need to have it narrowed and thats probably more money than you want to spend. I would look for a 44, out of a 72' to 75' CJ5 or find a 44 out of an old mail jeep, I think they had 3:54 gears, but I'm not certain, the scrambler probably has 3:54 or 3:73's if it's stock. What ever you decide on, It will probably be cheaper to buy somthing with the correct gear ratio.

What is the width out on the EB 9" I know that the early Ford pickups had a 9" that is around 61"

I'm not positive, but I think the EB is about 4" or 5" wider than a jeep. He could put a full width front end in also ( which I'm not a fan of), But I think his whole idea was to keep it inexpensive and simple.

DID HE BEND THE SHAFT OR THE HOUSING? IF THE HOUSING IS STILL GOOD AND ALL HE IS REPLACING IS THE SHAFT, PUT A FULL FLOATER IN. BUT I WOULD GET THE DRIVE FLANGES INSTEAD OF THE LOCKING HUBS...
TILL NEXT TIME-

EB 9's are about 58-60" wide if I remember correctly - would be a great strength upgrade

The Scrambler would be a wide track, so an EB or Scout 44 only a couple inches wider. The '72 - '75 CJ's are narrow track & I think mail Jeeps are even narrower.
