This showed up in my driveway this morning! It's a 99 Windstar SE with 32k on it. Plenty safe for the wife and kiddo's, and the power sliding door, and bells and whistles are nice. Now, after doing some research, I just need to find a good extended warranty for it  !

Anyone know of places to get a good extended warranty?

OK, let's just look at this logically. I have a

Wife
2 Year Old
Another Kid on the way (any day)
A Golden Retreiver
A house in Suburbia
[/list=1]

It was gonna happen sooner or later! :D At least I still have my suburban and buggy project on the other side of the driveway to balance out the estrogen/testosterone mix

:D

Seriously, anyone know where to get a good extended warranty? All this power stuff scares the hell out of me!

I heard the 94-98's were REALLY bad. These are just bad. The body style change was in 99, and this has the 3.8l ford motor, not the 3.0 Nissan one. I still hear they can still have their problems though, especially with the trannys.

Minivans kick ass, I'd love to have one.

I guess to be really cool, you need to run out and get an SUV so you can be 'cool' and not drive a minivan

Any minivan on the planet is superior in room and convenience to any SUV. Only the big-biggie SUVs come close to room inside, but then you need a ladder to get your infant buckled into his rear-facing center seat, right Erich? :flipoff2: :p

Seriously though, that's a real consideration. You can't beat a minivan for a DD family vehicle.

I bought an old man Burb last month. 88 with 71k on the clock. Aluminum running boards and blue and white. LOL Selling my Supra. Sold the wifes 79 Blazer 2 weeks ago and it was replaced with a Honda Accord. We have a 22ft Airstream sitting in the driveway.

You already have a Burb I can see it in that picture. Why the hell did you need the van or is that the wifes Soccer mobile?

See below. I already own one of those gas guzzling, greenhouse gas emmiting monster SUVs, so I have 'cool' covered.

BTW, nice edit: Yes, we did have a kid buckled (very securely) in a rear facing infant seat., and it was a royal PITA to get him in the lifted burb. This has teathers at every seat (except the drivers, I guess they don't plan a baby driving) for the car seats too. :flipoff2:

This is more for the wife than me. I tried putting the 2nd car seat in our other car (Probe GT), and it just wasn't gonna happen. Our burb has been beat too hard, has too much wrong with it to be practical for the wife. Besides, this will be great for road trips (planning a TX trip for Xmas and Sea World next year, the there is always TDS! :D ).

When we were looking at it, I even practiced turning around in the seat, smacking the kids (no REAL kids were harmed in the demonstration) and using phrases like 'Don't make be turn this car around' and 'quit hitting your sister'! It even has a little 'mommy mirror' that swivels so you can check your aim!

Hehe, generally the only people who really harp on mini vans are the ones who don't "need" mini vans.

4 kids, 2 adults and a Rotti plus camping / daytrip gear plus canoe do not fit in anything but a minivan. Got an old Safari on one side of the drive for people and towing the tent trailer, cj5 in the g'rage for use with 2 people and tent, and the Grand for any combination that fits in the middle :D

Even people who don't need all the seats sure appreciate having them when it comes time to pack the kids AND their friends up to go swimming or whatever. They've got their place.

Did I mention that they a re invariably more spacious than cars or cute ute's? That means you can seat the kiddies further away from you when driving and that's a verrry good thing sometimes :D

My wife thought we needed one (till we got the Montero) but our family is not large enought to justify it. It would just be a bigger garbage can. You hit on another reason I don't want one. You become the "taxi" for other people. "They can take all the kids to the zoo, they will all fit in the minivan." "Do you wanna drive to the beach, you can carry all of us and our stuff. Otherwise, we will have to take three vehicles!"

No thanks.

i actually drove a minivan across country once. we were going from Alexandria to LA to take my g/f's brothers to their uncles house for the summer. they were both over 6'2 and my g/f's idea was to take her Eclipse! her dad offered up the customized (astorvan i think) mini and the gas card. larger ceiling, tv/dvd, playstation, back seat converted to a bed, shades on the window, captains chairs up front............. needless to say, after about 2 hours on the road, i was convinced that this was the way to go.......... but after i ran into some honey's at the next gas stop giving me odd looks, i swore never to get one while single!!!!:D :flipoff2:

:flipoff2:

Hahahahah. Yes we have discovered that this is a problem with the Burb. While I enjoy the fact that the kids have a hard time kicking the back of the seat the kids have figured out mom can't reach them to smack them easily. We have the car seat for the youngest in the center in the burb so the Mouth...I mean the oldest is generally out of reach now. My skinny 5ft tall wife has already gone over the center consol to
"fix" the ten year old.

Drove the wifes Honda a couple day's ago...bout had to kill the oldest for kicking the seat. Had to drive into town where I knew parking was tight and docking the Burb might be a problem and the 2 year old was kicking the seat strapped in her car seat. She's still too cute too smack yet. She will be talking soon so it's going down hill fast.

Sorry to burst the bubble but Windstars are not safe at all! I was on the jury for a suit against Ford regarding the Windstars flaws. I learned way too much about minivans in that process. The windstar has nothing between the driverside passenger and the rest of the world but the .08" sheet metal and the plastic interior panel. The just of the case was that a Ford F150 45'd the windstar and just ripped right through it all the way down the driverside and caught the rear suspension, then flipped it. 5 year old in the seat in question was thrown from the vehicle and hung by the seat belt. She ended up with a Christopher Reeve type spinal injury, becaus the seat belt got cut by the F150. She'll be ventilator dependent and paralyzed for life. Ford ended up settling out of court after the trial was over and we had been deliberating for 4 days. Windstars suck!

She was in the driver side rear middle passenger seat and at the time it happened she was legal to be seated and restrained where she was. That was the first thing on all our minds as well. The case was more to do with the absence of the structural door beams in the rear seat position than anything else. The Windstar that was in the wreck was the type that has no door on the left rear. The Ford answer was no door, so no door beam. The Ford team had a better case to me in the end but I still would never buy a Windstar after what I learned.

The one we have has the dual doors. The single doors are 98 and older. This is the press release for the 99

From: http://www.autoworld.com/news/Ford/Windstar_Safety.htm

The Windstar minivan just received the highest ratings in side-impact crash testing making it the first and only vehicle to receive dual five-star ratings for driver and passenger protection in a frontal crash and dual five-star ratings for front and rear door side-impact protection. The ratings are awarded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) based on the results from actual high-speed crash tests...

...Windstar has earned top five-star ratings for driver and passenger in frontal crashes since its introduction in 1995. The top rating for side impact was achieved this year in the vehicle's initial side impact test. NHTSA instituted side impact crash testing last year.

Should have bought a suburban instead. Doesn't scrape its belly on rutted logging roads the way minivans do.

My brother's wife forced a Honda minivan on them, and HE drivies it. She gets the four door volvo. He's the most whipped guy I know, the poor bastidge.

I hope I die before I ever own a minivan. Even my wife hates them. And she has had to lift our four kids in and out of our suburban over the years....

My condolences.:flipoff2:

I had a big smartass remark complete with wink ready for the masses, but it seems a bit crass in this situation. Suffice it to say, maybe a helmet and HANS device would have helped her. Who knows, our grandchildren may be wearing helmets in their cars and scorning our recklessness. It only makes sense, because no matter what the restraint level, head and neck injuries are what kills most kids.

Seriously, anyone know where to get a good extended warranty? All this power stuff scares the hell out of me!

Definitely get the extended warranty!!! The transmission WILL go out. It's unavoidable, and you sure as hell don't want to pay for it out of pocket! My Mom's was almost $2000!!:eek:

I've been trying to talk my SO into a Honda Odyssey for a while. she's having none of THAT.

Now I think I've got her almost hooked on the VW Touareg. Badass.

We had Interstate as our extended warrenty. Don't remember exactly what it cost because we got it through the dealer ship. It was 100% bumper to bumper with a $100 deductible. They covered every claim without any problems. We were on of the lucky ones, our tranny went out about 3,000 miles before the warrent expired. Took it to a tranny shop of my choice, $100 later back on the road. :D

Yeah, minivans suck, but with 3 kids still in car seats, the only thing that would fit them all would cost twice as much.:D
